OLLI Members: The Outreach Committee (Still) Needs You!
By Camille Hodges, OLLI Outreach Committee Chair

The OLLI Outreach Committee’s task is to make our presence known in the community. Here’s a reminder of how you can help:

Fairfax Fall Fair, Saturday, October 13

  • Sign up to provide a smile and info about OLLI at a table during the Fairfax City Fall Fair on Saturday, October 13. We need three or four people to fill the 1:00‑3:00 and 3:00‑5:00 slots. If you can possibly help out, please e-mail me at your earliest convenience: mimihodges4@gmail.com.
  • Represent OLLI at the State Department Job Retirement Fair information table on October 23 from 1:00‑4:00 at the Foreign Service Institute (FSI) Center, 4000 Arlington Blvd., Arlington, VA.
  • Introduce a friend to OLLI by bringing him/her to a class as a guest. Classes at Church of the Good Shepherd (COGS) or Fairfax Lord of Life are suggested due to their space availability.
  • Join the OLLI Outreach Committee and share your wonderful ideas.

Thank you!

Playing for Our Safety
By Michelle Blandburg, Member of the Board of Directors and OLLI Players

The OLLI Players have become well known for entertaining senior communities throughout Northern Virginia. However, we also act for serious purposes! As part of Fairfax County’s “Silver Shield Anti-Scam Campaign,” the theatrical troupe has performed skits aimed at helping seniors understand scam schemes targeted against us. Our skits have been broadcast on the Fairfax County Public Access channel, as well as performed for the County Board of Supervisors.

To reach an even broader audience, the OLLI Players will be working with the county’s Office of Family Services to provide a continuing series of presentations at Sunrise Senior Living communities county-wide. The premiere event will be held on Thursday, October 11, from 12:30 to 2:30 at Sunrise of McLean, 8315 Turning Leaf Lane, McLean, VA 22102. The event is open to the public; all are invited to attend! Lunch will be provided, but seating is limited. RSVP by October 8 by calling 703-734-1600 or visit SunriseMcLean.com. Information on future events and the county’s services for seniors can be found at fairfaxcounty.gov/familyservices/older-adults. Tallwood Book Club October Reminder
By Ceda McGrew, Tallwood Book Club Coordinator

The Tallwood Book Club will meet on Wednesday, October 10, at 1:30 in the Annex. The book for discussion is Killers of the Flower Moon: the Osage Murders and the Birth of the FBI by David Grann. In the 1920s, oil was discovered in Oklahoma beneath the land of the Osage Indians, making them some of the richest people in the world. Then, one by one, they began to be killed off. Under the direction of its young director, J. Edgar Hoover, the newly-formed Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) took over the case and discovered one of the most chilling conspiracies in American history. All OLLI members are welcome.

The book selection for November 14 is Beartown by Fredrik Blackman, author of A Man Called Ove.

Poet's Corner

Melding

Some husbands and wives
Seem to meld seamlessly -
We don’t

Some sense their spouse’s
Innermost body rhythms -
We don’t

Some over time begin to learn
The other’s daily routines -
Not us
Also

Some over time decide
To go on separate ways
We won’t

Letter to the Editor

Dear Editor,Members: Where Are You?

For many years as an active member of both the Planning Committee and the Board of Directors, I recall that a major desire from our members was to increase the visibility of Mason faculty in our classes. Several years ago, Jennifer (Disano, our Executive Director) responded by creating an ongoing Monday-morning lecture series on the Mason campus less than a 5-minute drive from our Tallwood campus. Jennifer recruited many fabulous Mason professors, both current and emeritus, as well as past deans and department chairs as program presenters. Preferred close-in parking is provided in a nearby Mason garage as well as a breakfast consisting of juice, coffee, muffins, pastry, bagels, yogurt, and fruit all for a fee of $30 per session of three classes—quite a bargain. Unfortunately, the attendance for the first three classes of this term, which includes members from all three OLLI campuses, is underwhelming and does not present a great image of OLLI. Where are all those members who requested more Mason teachers?

– Stan Schretter

Thank you for your perceptive note. The Mason Faculty Club series is a fun, unique, intimate, and enjoyable opportunity for members. Spaces are still available for F902, a series of classes, 9:30-11:00, on the last three Mondays in October. Members are encouraged to register.

– Editor
