Mike Emery is back at OLLI! By Alice Slayton Clark, Communications and Program Associate
Have you noticed a familiar face on the OLLI Tallwood campus? It’s Mike Emery, a former site assistant who helped with off-campus audio-visual (AV) needs. Mike has rejoined the OLLI staff as the Fairfax Site Assistant, replacing Bill Walsh who retired this summer.
Mike is OLLI’s “go-to” person for Fairfax classroom needs. Whether you need help with audio-visual equipment, classroom materials, or event set-up, he is on hand for all administrative and technical support in and out of term at Tallwood.
Mike’s expertise runs deep. For 37 years he served as a program analyst for the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms, managing information-technology-related projects and programs, application design, form design, web site, and page management. Prior to that, he served as explosive ordinance disposal technician at Fort McNair, helping the US Army to render devices safe and to dispose of explosive materials, among other challenging responsibilities.
In his free time, Mike provides audiovisual and other technical support for his church, Fairfax Lord of Life. He likes to tinker with his home computers and work with Adobe Photoshop and Lightroom to enhance his photographic pursuits. A dedicated husband, he also helps his wife Ruth with her successful catering business, Tea Time Delicacies.
Mike says he is excited to be back in the OLLI community, “working out solutions to the technical problems and keeping active.” Please stop by and welcome Mike back into the OLLI family!

OLLI Members Welcome an Honor Flight ByJohn Nash, E-News Editor and WriterIt was a small but enthusiastic group of OLLI members who joined almost 100 others in welcoming an Honor Flight at Dulles International Airport on Saturday, October 12. Members (pictured left to right below) Colleen Tuddenham, Christine Brooks, Bob Kelberg, Manny Pablo, John Nash, Sherry Hart, and Michelle Blandburg helped welcome 30 veterans and guardians from New York to spend the day in Washington, DC, visiting the memorials dedicated to their service.“I really enjoyed this,” said Colleen Tuddenham, herself an Army veteran. “I’ve known about these events but never participated in one. I’m glad I did!”Sherry Hart also voiced her enthusiasm, saying “This was my first time doing anything like this. I really enjoyed the spirit and positive support everyone showed who welcomed the veterans."Honor Flights occur throughout the spring and fall at both Dulles and Reagan National airports. The program was originally designed to bring WWII veterans to Washington, DC, to visit the WWII Memorial. Now, due to the aging and declining numbers of WWII veterans, the Honor Flights are shifting to recognizing Korean and Vietnam war veterans.Afterward, the OLLI group had lunch at Bernie’s Deli where Bob Kelberg and Bernie talked New York stuff that Sherry, a New York native, claimed to understand. This week OLLI students enjoyed a superb preview of Mason’s upcoming musical, Rags. Several members of the cast descended on TA‑1 and for 90 minutes enthralled the crowd with selections from the musical. Rick Davis, dean of Mason’s School of Visual and Performing Arts, is directing the play and presented some of the background of the musical. He introduced Musical Director Joe Walsh, who accompanied on piano. The extraordinarily talented group of Mason players performed several songs from the play, moving the audience to laughter and tears.
Rags centers on a group of Jewish immigrants in New York in 1910, who face both challenges and hope as they adjust to their new home. The story and themes are particularly relevant to our own times. If you loved Fiddler on the Roof, you won’t want to miss Rags.
On Monday, October 21, Rick Davis will return to OLLI to tell us about the development of the play as well as visual effects, staging, and costuming. We’re in for another real treat. Come join the discussion in TA‑1, 11:50-1:15.

OLLI member Alan Frederick died August 26 at his home in Fairfax. An enthusiastic participant in many OLLI literature classes, he always contributed perceptive insights and comparisons. A voracious reader, he frequented public libraries in Fairfax, Alexandria, and Arlington. He also used the Mason library and took many literature courses at the university, where Professor Keith Clark was a favorite instructor.
Alan contributed numerous suggestions to OLLI’s Language, Literature, and Theater Program Planning Group. He was an original member of the Classic Literature Club and delighted in the club’s mission to tackle “difficult” works.
A memorial service was held in early September in Fairfax. More information is available at this link.
