Religious Studies Club

July 30, 2015 by Ernestine Meyer

Second and Fourth Fridays
Tallwood

Coordinator:   Steve Goldman

This new club is designed to provide a forum for ongoing discussions and explorations of a wide range of religious studies topics. All OLLI members with an interest are welcome, including those of any faith traditions as well as seekers, secular humanists, agnostics, and atheists. The participants will shape the club’s agenda, format and focus. No topic will be considered too controversial or off-limits for discussion. Some of the initial topics to be explored will include the following:

  • What principles do religions hold in common and where are the differences?
  • Are some actions inherently good or evil - or does it depend on the situation?
  • How does one identify a “sacred text?”

OLLI Photo Club - Catalog Covers

October 29, 2014 by Ernestine Meyer

Overview • Galleries (See Galleries) • Monthly Themes • Field Trips • Speakers • Projects

OLLI Catalog cover images are usually selected from photos taken and proposed by club members. It is important to think well ahead in planning to submit seasonal images for catalog covers since selection is made prior to the start of the season depicted on the cover.  For example, the photograph for the winter 2015 Catalog cover had to be selected by early October 2014. Consequently that photo was taken on a snowy day the previous winter.

Requirements.

  • Photo must be in portrait orientation.
  • Sizing must be 300ppi at 8 inches by 10 inches.
  • Note from the examples that text may be placed within the image at the top, bottom and right.  Key subject elements should not intrude upon these areas.

Russia Discussion Group Ends

September 26, 2014 by Ernestine Meyer

Interest both in the US media and in OLLI has diminished considerably as events in Ukraine and Russia have become overtaken in importance by our new War on ISIS. For that reason, I am suspending meetings of the group until further notice. If events warrant, I will resurrect the group.

Final Meeting?

September 24, 2014 by Ernestine Meyer

Remember that we meet again on Friday, Sept 26, at 9:30 in the Tallwood Annex. Only about five people showed up for the last session, so if interest continues to be low this week, I will go ahead and dissolve the group. It looks stalemated and is apt to drag on for years (see Georgia-Russian relations).

A former US Ambassador to Ukraine recently visited Kiev and provided this recap of his impressions: http://tinyurl.com/nbppjf4

Club will meet at high noon in TA-1 tomorrow

September 14, 2014 by Ernestine Meyer

Last Tuesday’s Washington Post featured an editorial on the Ukraine crisis entitled “Making Mr. Putin feel the heat of sanctions” arguing for greater sanctions. This is a quote:

“The status quo in eastern Ukraine should not be acceptable to the United States or any European nation…… Mr. Putin has paid an insufficient price internationally for invading an independent country.”
That raises some interesting questions for our discussion tomorrow:
1. Which vital “US national interest” is involved in Ukraine’s independence?
2. Why is it OK for example to bomb Syria, Libya, and Serbia as long as we don’t put boots on the ground? Isn’t bombing a violation of national sovereignty?
