Getting the Most Out of Your OLLI Membership

At the 2018 National Osher Lifelong Learning Institute Annual Conference in North Carolina, National Resource Center (NRC) Director Steve Thaxton remarked, “If you’ve been to one OLLI, you’ve been to one OLLI.” This adorable quip rings true! Of the 125 OLLIs across the country, each is unique—offering homegrown amazing courses, fun social events, and its unique fee structure. Most OLLIs are formally a part of a university and fall under the purview of an academic department or continuing education. Of the 125 OLLIs, OLLI Mason is one of only five 501(c)(3) non-profit affiliates, which are self-governing. Many OLLIs charge a nominal membership fee with added per‑class fees, which quickly increase overall out-of-pocket expense to their members. At OLLI Mason, you enjoy a smorgasbord of courses with no added fees and an archive of recorded classes, plus many university privileges such as College of Visual and Performing Arts (CVPA) performance discounts, library access, and a special low‑cost annual parking pass. OLLI Mason boasts a robust staff and an unprecedented number of volunteers involved with everything from Board service to member services, teaching, and program building. Thank you for your ongoing commitment to OLLI Mason. Your membership and volunteer efforts keep OLLI Mason a standout Institute across the national scene.

Computers to the Moon
Life Expectancy of Mac Computers

The Computer Club (OLLI Personal Computer User Group, or OPCUG) will meet with its partner, the Potomac Area Technology and Computer Society (PATACS), on Saturday, October 16 via Zoom. Program activities begin at 1:00.

Computers to the Moon – Presented by Mark Schulman. How did the United States manage to land on the moon in the 1960s at a time when PCs didn't exist, and computers were the size of a warehouse? This session examines the history of computers aboard early US spacecraft, leading to the monumental effort to create a computer capable of landing a spacecraft on the moon. While it's easy to believe today that computers back then were primitive playthings, it turns out that ingenious, driven engineers and software developers, even half a century ago, could accomplish amazing things. In this session, you'll learn what they created and how it worked.
 
Mark Schulman spent his career as an instructor and software designer. He has taught a wide range of programming courses for major corporations and worked on large software development projects. He currently manages the information technology department for a small company that does clinical drug trials, as well as the computers for a small medical practice. His major "geek" interest these days is the computer technology that made the moon landings possible in the 1960s. He lives near Orlando, Florida.
 
Learn in 30: Life Expectancy of Mac Computers – Presented by Lorrin Garson. Knowing how long to keep a computer and when to replace it invariably comes to “it depends.” So, on what does it depend? There are many factors—e.g., (a) age of the computer, (b) the manufacturer’s warranty and willingness to repair, (c) security issues, (d) a need for more computing power, (e) compatibility of essential applications with the operating system, (f) budget. Also discussed will be the life expectancy of hard disk drives and solid-state drives, which are components likely to fail first. Although the presentation is focused on Apple computers, many of the factors apply to PC/Windows computers as well.
 
Lorrin is a regular speaker at OPCUG/PATACS sessions on a wide variety of computer and scientific topics.

Dr. Linda Apple Monson produces a periodic “Notes from the Director.” This email is full of interesting online performances by the students and faculty of the School of Music. Kudos to You!

OLLI is a member-run organization with hundreds of volunteers giving their time, talent, and wisdom to support, improve, and run our non-profit. Along with a small, effective, and dedicated staff, OLLI volunteers are core to OLLI's now 30-year success.

Even in the midst of a pandemic, OLLI is strong and vibrant due to the efforts of member volunteers contributing in various ways: teaching, program development, outreach, technology, catalog editing, e-news communications, Board service, and so much more. The OLLI Tom Swift club (Audiovisual Committee) has spent countless hours to find solutions to implement hybrid technology in our classrooms, which will benefit every OLLI member. The OLLI program teams design program offerings and recruit teachers who build the wonderful curriculum enjoyed by all.

Additionally, OLLI members serve as ambassadors in service to the wider community through leadership on boards at Mason (Arts/Music/Economics/Humanities/Health) and as volunteers via Volunteer Fairfax, Britepaths, CERTS, and numerous other impactful organizations. Recently, OLLI Players participated in an awareness project for Fairfax County’s Channel 16, acting in skits for courtroom simulations; and the OLLI photography Club, once again, stepped up to volunteer at the Senior Olympics. THANK YOU for all you continue to do, on behalf of OLLI and for the community in which we live!

Hail and Farewell—OLLI Staff Updates

Join us in bidding farewell to Dallas Joder, our Reston site assistant, who departed OLLI at the end of summer term. We will certainly miss Dallas’s interest in scientific bias and artificial intelligence!

Please join us in welcoming Richard Hoback and Brenton Abrams, our newest OLLI staffers serving as site assistants, as they support your OLLI classes over fall term.

Richard Wesley William Hoback V is the middle child in a family of three kids. Richard is a military brat, so he has lived all over the US, moving with his family. He is currently a student at NVCC, studying Visual Arts. Richard enjoys movies, music, art, coffee, computers, fashion, and games. His favorite medium to use for traditional art is pen and ink.

Brenton Abrams is a 25‑year-old of Jamaican heritage, with a passion for music, and plays bass guitar, trumpet, and piano with a focus in music production. He has traveled to many countries and has lived in Venezuela and Spain. Brenton's experience ranges from facilitating and instructing swim lessons to music engineering.

It is 1890 and I can't find my little boy. Have you ever ridden on a polar bear on a carousel? He was riding the carousel. He has blond hair, and he is wearing a dark blue overcoat. On his legs are gaiters, laced at the sides, and he has a dark blue Tam O'Shanter on his head. He was on the polar bear. Please look for him, he is missing and is all I have. Oh, his name is Willie.
 
Plan to attend the OLLI Players presentation of The Haunted Carousel on Friday, October 15.  Maybe you’ll discover what happened………..oops, better not tell! You should attend if you want to find out what happened on The Haunted Carousel.

October is Cybersecurity Awareness Month. The OLLI PC User Group and our partner the Potomac Area Technology and Computer Society (PATACS) are presenting a special session about this topic on Wednesday, October 6. While Bob Gostischa, our presenter, will be appearing via Zoom, we'll also be meeting in person at the Carlin Hall Community Center, 5711 S. 4th Street, in Arlington, at 7:00.

Is Cybersecurity Really Important? Paying attention to cybersecurity is more important today than it has ever been. COVID-19 has exposed many more vulnerabilities than in prior years. More of us are now working from home, many children are learning from home, and many of us have added more "internet of things" (IoT) devices to make our lives easier. These devices present their own dangers which need to be addressed.

This presentation shows how using the right programs and applications can help keep you safe and secure, as well as reduce your privacy exposure. Using free programs and apps whenever possible to accomplish this goal is an added bonus and this presentation includes information on many recommended free programs. Join presenter Bob Gostischa as he guides you towards secure cybersecurity practices.

Norbert "Bob" Gostischa, after a successful career in banking, enjoys his retirement as an enthusiastic information technology (IT) security expert, most notably for Avast, the creator of Avast Antivirus software. The Avast website has a discussion and help forum where Bob has been helping with security-related and general computer issues since 2004.

The first meeting of the 2021-2022 sessions of the History Club will take place Wednesday, October 6 at 4:00. This meeting will be on Zoom; the link and other information will be sent in the OLLI Daily Schedule for October 6. The meeting ID is 896 6702 3413 and the passcode is 765266.

Author Ed Linz will discuss the striking and alarming similarities between the years preceding the Great Depression and the current era. Using the research and interviews from his new book, They Never Threw Anything Away, Ed will describe the response of Americans from all socio-economic groupings to the realities and challenges of the Depression. There will be opportunity for questions and discussions.

Ed Linz, a graduate of the US Naval Academy, is the author of four books, two of which are non-fiction, one fiction, and one textbook. He also holds master’s degrees from George Mason University and Christ Church College, Oxford University.

We used to say that non-club members are welcome, but with Zoom, we can dispense with that formality and encourage all OLLI members to attend next Wednesday’s meeting. Join us for this first meeting of the History Club which promises to be an informative one that will give us much to think about.

Welcome to Fall Term 2021

As a member of OLLI, you are a part of a legacy that began 30 years ago with one simple idea: enjoyment of university level lectures for adults to learn, share, and explore interests and build a community of friends. This “community of friends” has kept OLLI vibrant, thriving, and resilient. Today, although OLLI is holding strong with over 1,000 members, we have seen a membership decline that should concern us all. Membership renewal and recruitment are the most important things YOU can do to help OLLI during this challenging time. Take some time today and tell a friend about OLLI. Thanks to Zoom technology, members have enjoyed thousands of hours of synchronous, engaging programs from the comfort of their homes. As we emerge from the pandemic, OLLI campuses are under a major transformation both with the implementation of hybrid technology in classrooms, and at Tallwood, with the construction of an accessibility ramp and additional Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) improvements. These innovations will allow the return of many of our former members who have left due to relocation or mobility issues, and it will create opportunities for new members to enjoy all that OLLI offers.
 
I know all of you are curious to hear an update on return to in-person classes. The OLLI Board of Directors, program leadership, and staff are busy finding a way forward. We hope to begin moving to in-person classes as early as fall term with a handful of test classes. This will not change your fall course schedule. All classes for fall are via Zoom. As we experiment with hybrid technology, we intend to review delivery of this mode of teaching from all perspectives by evaluating teacher and member experiences, and by assessing technology and logistical support to effectively present the class. In addition, the university has required several health and safety measures with which we must comply. This includes proof of vaccination status and a daily electronic check‑in to verify that all individuals are healthy before coming to campus and the ability to track cases. Expect more information on this process in the coming weeks. Thank you for your continued support of OLLI as we navigate these changes. The future is bright and exciting!
Summary of September Board of Directors Meeting

The regular meeting of the Board of Directors was held September 17, 2021. OLLI President Paul Howard reported that hybrid class experiments continue with two sessions of basic trials with the leadership team of the OLLI Investment Forum. The plan is to make their sessions among the first hybrid classes later in the fall term. Paul also continued with outreach efforts by giving presentations to Virginia AARP volunteers and participating in a US State Department transition seminar.
 
Executive Director Jennifer Disano reported ramp installation at Tallwood should be complete by the end of September. The project is designed to meet requirements for compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). Related construction for the bathrooms and other areas will begin following the ramp completion.
 
Dallas Joder has stepped down from his position as site assistant in Reston. Two new part-time staff members, Richard Hoback V and Brenton Abrams, have joined our site-assistant team. 

Executive Committee meetings continue regarding several pressing topics including construction/improvements at the Tallwood campus, budget issues, COVID safety protocols required by the university, membership, and outreach.
 
In planning for spring 2022 return to campus, OLLI Mason hopes to deliver in-person, hybrid, and Zoom classes. Technology improvements to support hybrid classes are ongoing.
 
Currently there are 1003 members (985 annual and 18 intro). Sixty-six of the annual members are at the promotional rate.
 
One resolution was unanimously approved by the Board:
 
Resolution, 210918-01, The Board approves $25,000 in Scholarships/Grants for 2021 from Friends of OLLI funds for the following: Scholarships for George Mason departments, $20,000; university library grant, $1,000; scholarship for NVCC-Mason transfer student, $1,000; scholarship to purchase books for Mason maintenance staff, $1,000; and support for the Fall for the Book Festival, $2,000.

Dr. Peter Stearns Address Kicks Off Fall Term

On September 17, Dr. Peter Stearns, provost emeritus and university professor of history at Mason, a specialist in social history, led a class on the position of children in American society today.

Dr. Stearns began by reviewing the status of children through US history, stating that until recently we had been a rather child-friendly society, with children being considered important within families, and with government policies and programs supporting and investing resources in the needs of children. He believes this has changed in the past few decades and offered concrete examples. Polls show that childless couples report being happier than those with children. We are bearing fewer children than ever. Government actions on behalf of children have declined: we have not ratified the United Nations Convention on the Child, and no White House Conferences on the Child, sources of child-friendly policies, have been held in 40 years.

The US now has a birthrate too low to maintain a stable population (excluding immigration). Some possible consequences of having fewer children in our population include labor-force issues, reduced attention to, and investment in, children among citizens and government, and reduced ability of youth to advocate for its interests.

Dr. Stearns reviewed some possible causes of the changes in our attitudes toward children: the growing importance of careers to women; reluctance to bring children into the world as it is today; and perceptions that it is more difficult and costly today to raise children. Factors like scarcity and cost of good childcare, high college costs, and others are examples. He voiced concern over the decline in expectations that children will do “chores” and thereby learn to be societal contributors, gain self-confidence, and practice life skills.

He also voiced some hope based on current administration initiatives to support childcare, education, children’s health. But he stated that these hopes were “fragile.”

Dr. Stearns responded to many questions from attendees, including those on changes in childbearing patterns, the possible role of social media in our society’s attitudes toward children, the importance of economic factors, and comparisons with other nations.

Dr. Linda Apple Monson produces a periodic “Notes from the Director.” This email is full of interesting online performances by the students and faculty of the School of Music. Mason Mask Mandate: In a September 1 email, Mason President Gregory Washington announced that, as COVID-19 infections increase in the region, especially the prevalence of the Delta variant, effective immediately Mason again will require all individuals on our campus to wear masks indoors, including classrooms and laboratories, regardless of vaccination status (see this link). The university will not require masks to be worn by those who are vaccinated in outdoor settings at this time; however, unvaccinated individuals are required to continue to wear masks outdoors when physical distancing cannot be maintained or at a university event. To learn about mask policy exceptions, click here.

The university will continue to assess its policy regarding the wearing of masks in the context of federal, state, and local guidelines and the advice of the medical and public health communities. This renewed masking requirement is based on the recommendation of the Northern Virginia Health Directors, and in response to our adjacent jurisdictions that are experiencing elevated levels of COVID-19 and the Delta variant. Here’s hoping that everything is going well for all of you. Kids are back in school, and soon OLLI will be back as well. The summer saw lots of activity, including Tallwood work on the installation of the ramp to comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). Courses were also proposed for spring; the deadline for spring 2022 courses is October 8, 2021.

The tentative date for the Humanities/Social Science/Current Events (H/SS/CE) Program Planning Group meeting is Thursday, September 23, in the afternoon (exact time to be announced). Please add this date to your calendar.

Panoramic Images and Focus Stacking

The Computer Club (OLLI Personal Computer User Group, or OPCUG) will meet with its partner, the Potomac Area Technology and Computer Society (PATACS), on Saturday, September 18, via Zoom. Program activities begin at 1:00.

Panoramic Images and Focus Stacking – Presented by John Krout. First, this presentation will show you how to photograph that magic moment, meaning the fleeting appearance of a toddler's first steps, or when a graduate is handed a diploma, or when the bride and groom step out of the church. A widespread complaint about digital cameras is shutter lag, a delay between your tap on the shutter button and the actual capture of a photo. You will learn a very simple way to eliminate shutter lag.
 

Second, this presentation will show you two ways in which computers have made photography of difficult subjects much easier. The two specific types of subjects are close-ups of small items and super-wide images of very wide or tall subjects, bigger than even a wide-angle lens can depict.
 

In both cases, the computer can produce a much more pleasing image if you take multiple photos and then combine the photos using computer software. You will see examples and learn how to do both types of computer-based composition image prep.
 

PATACS member John Krout is a regular author of newsletter articles and frequent presenter at our meetings. He's won many awards for his photography.

Live Mason Music - Let's Keep the Music Playing

Grab your mask and come on over to the George Mason University Center for the Arts this month for the beginning of wonderful live music. We have enjoyed the many excellent virtual performances and programs last year—it kept us peaceful during the Zoom era. But this year will be very exciting!

Opening the live season is the Grand Piano Celebration with the incredible Dr. Linda Apple Monson and her talented faculty and students. It will be held on Sunday, September 19, at 3:00, in the Mason Center for the Arts Concert Hall. There will be classical music and an exciting Gershwin feature.

So please plan to join us—just $15 for senior tickets. Contact music.gmu.edu or call 703-993-2787.

OLLI President's Message July 23:
Tallwood Construction and Other News

Construction at Tallwood continues. The original ramp to the entry for TA-3 has been repaired/replaced. The integration of the TA-2 porch and the new ramp to comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) has been framed out.

Regarding preparation for conducting classes in hybrid mode (combining in-person and online presentation), the Audiovisual Support committee and staff have been learning how the new auto-tracking podium camera works. We plan to test a hybrid class/event with the Investment Forum team on August 28.

In preparation for a return to the classroom, state requirements for Mason affiliates (that’s us) have been approved and returned to the university. Mason is refining the final requirements to send to OLLI. The requirements will be given to the ad hoc health committee for preparations for approval by the Board of Directors and implementation by the OLLI staff.

Photography Club and Senior Olympics

The OLLI Photography Club welcomes photographers of all skill levels regardless of equipment, whether digital single-lens reflex (DSLR) cameras, point-and-shoot cameras, or cell phones. We foster a learning environment with monthly guest speakers who present their photos and experiences. We share our own photos from organized field trips as well as other photos we have taken. Periodically a member will share an interesting photographic experience or teach a new technique. More experienced photography club members are available to mentor anyone looking to learn more.

We have a special opportunity in September and can use your help if you like to photograph people and/or sports. The Northern Virginia Senior Olympics (NVSO) will take place September 18‑30 in our area. The OLLI Photography Club has once again volunteered to take photographs of these activities. However, there is such an abundance of events we can’t cover it all alone. The sports range from such traditional sports as cycling, diving, swimming, tennis, and track, to recreational activities such as cornhole, jigsaw puzzles, and sudoku. You can learn more about the NVSO at nvso.us. These photos are wonderful souvenirs for the participants, and past senior Olympians loved having their efforts captured. The NVSO also uses the photos for promoting the events. It is fun for the photographers too, meeting new people and seeing what fun these senior Olympians are having. Virtual Performances
Although Mason’s Fairfax campus is shut down, online entertainment and events at the Hylton Center continue for us to access and enjoy (https://hylton.calendar.gmu.edu/). Dr. Linda Apple Monson produces a periodic “Notes from the Director.” This email is full of interesting online performances by the students and faculty of the School of Music. If you would like to receive these bulletins, just send an email to Brianna Schoen at bschoen@gmu.edu. Also, the Center for the Arts has a website, Mason Arts at Home, which has a calendar of online events and access to many past performances.

All Mason Arts & Music events are postponed until September. But note that tickets for fall 2021 performances are now on sale at both the Mason Center for the Arts and the Hylton Center at:

Share Your Family History with Mason Students!

Editor’s Note: This article appeared in a prior issue of the E‑News; it appears here again in hopes of encouraging members to enjoy an instructive and rewarding experience while supporting OLLI's relationship with Mason faculty and students.

We are happy to welcome Dr. Spencer Crew back to the Mason campus after his leave of absence to work as the Interim Head of the National Museum of African American History and Culture (NMAAHC). He is currently looking for 10 OLLI members to participate in his fall 2021 course, “History of the Family.” This will involve being interviewed by students in his upcoming course, which will be in session from September-December. OLLI members who participated in this intergenerational exchange in the past described sharing their family history with Mason students as a personally rewarding experience. The class is currently scheduled to meet virtually on fall Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10:30-11:45. However, you will not be required to meet with students every week.

Coffee Klatch to Feature Fall Term Classes

Join your OLLI friends at the Grab ‘n’ Gab Coffee Klatch for a bit of on-line socializing on Thursday, August 19 from 10:00 to 11:30, and hear from some of the OLLI instructors who will be teaching classes this fall. Registration starts on August 16, so this is a perfect time to get a preview of some of the classes planned for the fall term. Register for Event #1205 via the member portal or contact the registrar at ollireg@gmu.edu.

Perhaps it was on an errand, say, to the farmer for more seed corn
Or to gain access to a cornfield for more or finer kernels

Or one of the younger chicks in the village might have wandered
