Extraterrestrial Antony and Cleopatra Performed by OLLI Players

By Doris Bloch, Program Committee Co-chair

It is unlikely that William Shakespeare ever encountered aliens, but in Mason’s Harris Theatre on August 3-4, there they were. Mason was host to a premier performance of this unique approach to Antony and Cleopatra, written and directed by Alex Bulova and performed by the OLLI Players. In this play, Antony and Cleopatra in Space, Mark Antony, as a member of the powerful interplanetary Martian triumvirate, was a resident of Mars, while Cleopatra was queen of Venus. The performance was presented as a 1930s radio play, with the seven actors playing multiple roles and adding many appropriate-to-radio sound effects. The various planets and other space travel images were represented by backdrop projections and there was even a role for a robot. Interspersed among the five acts were radio commercials, several for Shakespearean memes, such as the Ophelia brand lifejackets.

Bulova has written several original playscripts, and in the past the OLLI Players have collaborated with him to perform them. Currently he is one of the two company playwrights in residence at the Class Act Players Theater Company. The OLLI Players group consists of OLLI members who love theater, enjoy acting, and travel throughout the Northern Virginia area to bring theater to other groups. Harris Theatre was a perfect venue for this show!

A Newly Published Book

By Ruta Sevo, OLLI Member

My fourth novel, Pip of Sedro Woolley, has just been published. It is available as an ebook or paperback at Amazon.com; click here.

It is in the genre of magical realism and metaphysical fiction, drawing on reported accounts of contact with unidentified flying objects and aliens. It features telepathy, past lives, contact with extraterrestrials, and a set of New Age beliefs called “the Pleiadian message.” If you are following the events at Area 51, for example, this book is in that alley.

There is a video trailer with eerie music on YouTube at this link.

Poet's Corner

Loony and in Love

The mellow moon
Shining in the dark night
Like a solitary lantern
Has been a marker
Of both Love and Madness.

Lovers have looked up from
Their love boats and seen
The moon reflected in the lake
And were enthralled and in love.

For billions of years tides
Have danced to the moon's distant
But persistent pull
By silver ropes.

The earth wobbled less
With its ancient companion
Circling round and round.

The residents of the lunatic asylum
Wrongly blamed the moon
For their madness.

A half century ago
Men ended their longing
And landed on the moon
Dancing a little dance of joy.

The moon surface itself
Was less romantic
With face pocked from
Millions of asteroids.

Man saw for the first time
The whole earth
With its swirling white clouds
And blue waters.

As we reach to the skies
We are now citizens of the cosmos.
