Audio for Everybody Using Audacity;
Apps for Language Learning

By Paul Howard, OPCUG Program Chair

The Computer Club (OLLI Personal Computer User Group, or OPCUG) will meet with its partner, the Potomac Area Technology and Computer Society (PATACS), on Saturday, January 21 at Tallwood. Join us at 12:30 for soft drinks and socializing in the social room. Program activities begin at 1:00.

Audio for Everybody Presented by Tom Gutnick
If you have a computer, you have much of what you need for a recording studio. Want to know how to create a podcast, or convert your vinyl or cassette collection to digital? We’ll start by looking at the fundamentals of digital audio, then we'll explain hardware (e.g., microphones), demystify MP3 files, and finally show how you can use Audacity for audio editing. (Audacity, available for Windows, Linux, and MacOS, is free open-source software, widely used because of its rich feature set and relative ease of use.)

Tom Gutnick first learned about audio engineering at his college radio station, and now uses his computer-based home recording studio for projects such as producing radio advertising spots.

Learn in 30: Apps for Language Learning Presented by Leti Labell
Trying to learn a new language or regain the language you learned in high school? Perhaps you’re just trying to remain fluent in a language you’ve already learned. Of the hundreds of apps for your smartphone or tablet to help with your language training, how can you tell which are useful, and which are a waste of time? Leti will discuss a variety of language apps, giving the pros and cons, and comparing the features. She will also demonstrate her favorite apps.

Leti Labell is an OLLI member and PATACS member with a lifelong love of computers. She is currently learning to speak Italian, using many iPhone apps as well as a variety of other methods.

See full details on this meeting by clicking here. For information on the computer club, see the OPCUG website. OPCUG dues of $5 for 2017 will be collected at this meeting.

Can't make the meeting in person? Dues-paid club members may attend via Zoom's cloud meeting service, beginning at 12:45. Send a message to webinarhosts@patacs.org if you plan to attend in this way. Join from PC, Mac, iOS or Android: https://zoom.us/j/916975581
(Zoom Meeting ID: 916 975 581).

Recycle Your Prescription Bottles at OLLI!
By Martha Powers, OLLI Vice PresidentDuring the first three weeks of the winter term (Jan 17–Feb 3), Member Services is going to be offering a prescription-bottle recycling program. Please bring your empty bottles (must have caps), preferably with the labels removed (most peel off easily). Large or small, with caps (either child-resistant or not)—all are welcome. You can deposit your donations in the box provided in the social room, on the desk next to the front door. The bottles will be collected regularly by Member Services Committee volunteer Ginge Sivigny, who is the mastermind behind our new recycling project. She’ll be taking the bottles to Burke Presbyterian Church, which is donating them to Matthew 25 Ministries (www.M25M.org). This worthy charity (accredited by the BBB and favorably reviewed by Charity Navigator) will ship the bottles to needy countries or recycle them in the US.

Ka-Bunk Tick

Ka-BUNK tick, ka-BUNK tick
The steady rhythmic whacking
Of objects in the dishwasher
Whose steadiness is lacking.

Ka-BUNK tick, ka-BUNK tick
I open the contraption
To find the two offending plates
And move them out of action.

Ka-TICK wock, ka-TICK wock
My sanity is waning
I cannot write a poem today
That’s what these words are ‘splaining.
