Board Meeting Summary March 18

The Board met at Tallwood last Friday, March 18th. Michelle Blandburg, chair of the nominating committee, announced the candidates for this year’s Board elections. They are Stephen Canner, Pat Carroll, Jim Dunphy, Terri Feldmayer, Glenn Kamber, Marianne Metz, John Nash, Manny Pablo, Russell Stone, Rita Way, and John Woods. Carol Henderson briefed the Board on the work of her committee preparing a book on the history of OLLI-Mason for the institute's 25th anniversary. Garrett Cochran has resigned as chair of the Facilities Committee. The Board passed a resolution recognizing his many years of service to OLLI. The Board of Visitors at Mason has selected OLLI as the recipient of their Jack Wood award in the business/nonprofit category in honor of our service to the university and the community. The award will be presented on May 5. At the October Board meeting, a resolution was approved to provide scholarship funds from Friends of OLLI (FOLLI) to the Early Identification Program (EIP) at Mason which helps students who will be the first in their family to attend college. At the March 18 meeting a resolution was passed to designate the amount as $6,500. The EIP may receive additional funds from three other local organizations that have pledged to strive to match this amount from OLLI.

Candidates for the Board of Directors

Candidate biographies and pictures will be posted on the OLLI website and in social rooms in April. Please look for these candidates in your classes and around the campuses. The candidates will speak to the membership at two events: the Super Salad Social in Reston on April 29 and the Annual Business Meeting and Picnic at Tallwood on May 6. You can complete registration for both events on the OLLI website.

Voting will take place from May 6 to 20, when six of the candidates will be elected as directors. You can cast your ballot on the website or via paper ballot in the Tallwood office.

Many thanks to the Nominating Committee members Toni Acton, Ray Beery, Camille Hodges, Beth Lambert, Dave Mason, Ted Parker and Martha Powers. They are commended for their dedicated efforts in recruiting such an impressive slate of candidates.

All members are strongly encouraged to see, hear, and meet the candidates. It is important for you to “VOTE … Because It’s YOUR OLLI!”

OLLI Theater Lovers Head to NYC-Broadway

next Wednesday, March 30. You can charge it. Balance is due June 20. OLLI Receives Donation from PATACS (Potomac Area Technology & Computer Society)

March 19, PATACS treasurer and program chair Paul Howard presented a wonderful gift to Friends of OLLI. On behalf of OLLI, OLLI President Glenn Kamber and Development Committee chair Lesley Bubenhofer gratefully accepted a $250 check, designated for audiovisual and videoconferencing enhancements in classrooms.Did you know that the PATACS and OLLI partnership began in February of 2007, and this association has accomplished remarkable and mutually beneficial achievements at OLLI? OLLI has been helped by PATACS members (31 of its current 96 members are, and others were, OLLI members) with a variety of technical challenges, such as providing consulting on email issues, performing computer configuration and repair, researching and implementing videoconferencing, and installing a LAN router. PATACS has been meeting jointly with the OLLI Computer Club since 2009, offering attendees more than 20 presentations, and conducting two troubleshooting clinics each year.PATACS has also been very generous in providing funds for OLLI. Five prior donations totaled $1,250 for Friends of OLLI, and three flat-panel monitors have been provided. What a remarkable, generous partner! Thank you PATACS for your invaluable support and assistance.PATACS conducts meetings at Tallwood on the third Saturday of each month at 12:30.

Why Not A Balloon? jan bohall

My car has sprouted a large flower
of necessity, tucked in some small notch
to keep me from wandering unfocused
up and down lanes of a parking lot
or garage trying to remember
clicking the remote key with abandon
searching for flashing lights
attempting to quell panic that rouses
a small, clear voice in my head
that says, “Give it up—call a cab”
to return later, rested and remembering
where it is that I parked the darn car.
