Hail and Farewell

We have good news and sad news. First, the sad news. 
 

It is with sadness that OLLI bids farewell to Kerin Braudaway, our much loved – and very much appreciated – administrator. Kerin will be advancing her career as administrative assistant with the National Rural Utilities Cooperative Finance Corporation. During her two years at OLLI, Kerin has been a key member of our staff, providing outstanding service to our members in a cheerful and efficient manner. We extend our best wishes to her in her new position.

 

The good news is that OLLI welcomes two wonderful new staff members. Susan Todenhoft will be OLLI’s new administrator. She has been an off-site audiovisual coordinator for the past year and is well acquainted with OLLI so we will be able to continue the same level of excellent services our members have enjoyed.

 

We also are pleased to have Nick Rodriguez join our staff as a member of our important audiovisual support team. He is a musician, composer and music producer as well as a knowledgeable AV and computer technician.

 

Please say hello to Susan and Nick when you see them, and welcome them to our fabulous OLLI family.

Election time is almost upon us! The biographies and pictures of nine candidates running for the OLLI Board are posted on the OLLI website (click here) and on display boards in the social rooms of the three campuses. 
Please come meet the candidates in person; find out what they think and let them know what you think is important for OLLI! 

Friday April 17
  • 9:30 Loudoun. The candidates will meet and greet members prior to the 10:00 Board of Directors meeting. All members are invited to the Board meeting in Room 211.
     
  • 12:30 Reston. Each candidate will give a brief presentation in Reston at the Super Salad Social as members relax and enjoy a delicious lunch.
Friday May 1
  • 10:00 Tallwood. Each candidate will give a brief presentation at the Annual Meeting in TA-1 followed by a potluck picnic outdoors.

OLLI Latin Class Featured in North American
Cambridge Classics Project Newsletter

OLLI’s Latin class, taught since the fall of 2012 by OLLI member Alana Lukes, is for those new to the language or who may have studied it before but have not used it. The class is featured in an article about adult Latin programs in the North American Cambridge Classics Project Newsletter, No. 49, Spring 2015 titled ego sum dominus quod sum senior! OLLI students from the Winter 2015 class and the instructor appear in pictures taken by OLLI member Dan Feighery. Interested in Technology? Learn with Us! Wednesday, April 15

OLLI'S Audiovisual Support Committee (a.k.a. the Tom Swift Squad) seeks additional volunteers to help ensure the smooth employment of OLLI's audiovisual resources. Our primary mission is to help instructors, liaisons, and staff with any audiovisual issues that might arise during the classes we attend. Our team is learning to use the LifeSize videoconferencing systems that offer the ability to share classes and meetings between OLLI locations.

We'll be meeting at 1:45 on Wednesday, April 15 in TA-1. We'll offer hands-on training on our classroom audiovisual equipment, discuss future activities, and improvements to our equipment and operational methods.

Third Saturday, April 18 – “What is Computer Forensics?”
Clipboard: The Basics and Beyond
  
The Computer Club (OLLI Personal Computer User Group, or OPCUG) will meet with its partner, the Potomac Area Technology and Computer Society (PATACS),  Saturday, April 18th at Tallwood. Join us at 12:30 for soft drinks and socializing in the social room. The program will begin at 1:00.
 
What is Computer Forensics? Presentation By Bob Osgood
Computer forensics is a field where computer science, computer engineering, law, and ethics are combined with the goal of collecting, analyzing, and reporting on digital evidence such that the evidence can be admitted into a court of law. The briefing will present an overview of computer forensics to include what Mason is doing in this area.
 
Bob Osgood is the Director of Computer Forensics and Data Analytics at George Mason University and retired after 26 years as an FBI agent with extensive experience in digital forensics.
 
Learn 30: – Clipboard: The Basics and Beyond! Presentation by Tom Gutnick
Whether you just need help on copy-and-paste or want to know how to use the clipboard “on steroids,” this session has you covered. The information presented will apply equally to Windows, MacOS, Linux, Android, and iOS.
Tom Gutnick has worked in the computer industry for most of his adult life. Now, through Sunny Banana IT Consulting, Tom helps small businesses and home offices that don't have their own IT departments. He also teaches personal technology at Arlington Adult Education and information technology at Northern Virginia Community College.

I HEARD VIRGINIA IS CLAMPING DOWN ON OLDER DRIVERS. TRUE?
 
Virginia is just being careful. Starting January this year, drivers over 75 can renew their license for five years at a time, instead of eight. And they can no longer do it online. It must be done in person at a VDOT office. And that means an eye test at the same time. Ok, a trifle inconvenient. But worth it if it gets Crazy Cousin Ida to rethink driving, while 89-year old Jessica Fletcher passes with flying colors. Eight years at our age means much more change than eight years at age forty!

I heard the sudden lift
Of your eyelids
In the still morning.
The easy rub of your shoulders
In the air above the cooling sheets.
The rustle of your lips
Against the white of your smile.
The quiet quickening of your breath,
While that silent thief of the nighttime dark,
The rising sun, stole
Over the almost silent city,
Where few on any early Sunday
Are aware of his criminal,
Gentle, and welcome reveille.
 
Later, the best time of any week,
Waking again into the unaccustomed quiet,
Then oranges, eggs, bagels,
Coffee, and the papers:
Those morning weekend
Complements to silence, sleep and you.

Plant Sale. 
Kick off Earth Week at Mason with the GMU Organic Gardening Association's annual seedling sale. The baby vegetables and herbs will include organic tomatoes, hot/bell peppers, sunflowers, pumpkins, watermelons, and an array of herbs. All proceeds go to purchasing seeds and supplies for the campus vegetable garden. Plants cost $3 each or two for $5.
