Rita Rowand from the Mason Study Abroad Office soon will be planning cultural tours for the Mason community, friends, and especially OLLI members. To assist in this effort, she would like OLLI members to provide information on their travel interests by completing either a paper survey, which can be found in the Tallwood office, or an online survey which can be accessed at https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/B8PC5FF.
The Annual Membership Meeting will be held on Friday, May 6, 2016, at 10:00, at Tallwood. The agenda for the meeting will include:
Reports from the OLLI President and Executive Director;
Brief speeches by the candidates for election to the Board and opportunity to ask questions of the candidates, moderated by the Nominating Committee chair; and
Opportunity for other questions and answers.
The vote for electing the Board of Directors will take place from Friday, May 6, through noon on Friday, May 20, 2016.
Election Procedure
Recognizing the accuracy, convenience, and efficiency of electronic balloting, the bylaws allow for electronic transmission, and members are encouraged to use this method of voting. To comply with the bylaws, on April 29, directions on How To Vote For BOD Candidates will be emailed to the OLLI membership, included in the OLLI E-News, and provided as a handout in classrooms. Printed directions will be mailed to those without email.
Any OLLI member who requests a paper ballot will receive one by mail with a preaddressed return envelope marked BALLOT ENCLOSED. Please notify the OLLI office to request a mailed ballot. Use this ballot to vote for up to six candidates. You can mail the ballot to OLLI or drop it in a ballot box at Tallwood, Reston, or Loudoun. Since you do not sign the ballot or return envelope, your vote remains completely anonymous. To be counted, all ballots must be received by noon on May 20, 2016.
Do not lose your ballot: No member having lost, damaged, or destroyed his/her paper ballot may receive a second ballot. Making more than six choices will invalidate your ballot. Similarly, more than one ballot per envelope, any ballot not in the furnished BALLOT ENCLOSED envelope, or any ballot not received by May 20 will be invalid. If you have questions about the election process, contact any member of the nominating committee: Michelle Blandburg (chair), Toni Acton, Dave Mason, Ray Beery, Camille Hodges, Beth Lambert, Ted Parker, and Martha Powers.
Have you signed up for the Seniors' Prom special event? It’s not too late! Emphasis here is on special, as in special food, special desserts, special decor, special attire, and special cause.
Food will be catered by our own Bob Coffin, of Wine & Cheese class fame. Special desserts will be from Éclat Caterers, headed by Kathleen Pablo, she of the Downton Tea and Chocolate! Chocolate! Chocolate! oversubscribed classes.
Special décor will include a Hollywood Oscars Gala with a Walk of Fame.
The Tallwood Trio and DJ John Henkle will perform.
Dress as your favorite cinema star, or don once again your Senior Prom strapless. (Those of you who went to private school won't need to pass the two-inch strap test this time!)
And, best of all, the glitter and glam is a fundraiser for OLLI’s gift to Mason's Office of Military Services. OLLI members benefit with “An Affair to Remember,” and the Office of Military Services benefits all year long with help to those who have sacrificed for us. Everybody wins!

Later they sent a tape to LRI.OLLI is celebrating its 25th year of classes for seniors in 2016. Dr. Rosemarie Zagarri will be guest speaker at the book launch of The Five George Masons: Patriots and Planters of Virginia and Maryland, by Pamela C. Copeland and Richard K. MacMaster. First published in 1975, a new second edition was recently published by the George Mason University Press.
Dr. Zagarri will speak about “George Mason in History and Memory” as part of the Mason Author Series, sponsored by the university libraries and the university Bookstore. The series highlights significant publications of Mason faculty and alumni.

Dr. Marco Overhaus will be at Mason to discuss “The Transatlantic Agenda 2016 to 2018: Foreign Policy Priorities for US-German Relations.” His presentation will address the results of a strategic reflection group that convened in the German Foreign Office at the end of 2015.
Dr. Overhaus is an expert on security issues affiliated with the German Institute for International and Security Affairs. He has recently completed a sabbatical project with the policy planning staff of the German Foreign Office and was a Fulbright Scholar.

The History Club will meet Wednesday, April 6, at 2:15 in TA-1. Our presenter will be Don Ferrett, speaking on “What’s in the Local Paper? From Simple Research to Major Project.” This talk details the many years Don and his brother spent researching genealogy and local history in a county in Michigan. As we will discover, there is a gold mine to be found in local papers, some of it surprising and some of it entertaining. This is history at its most essential, and we are delighted that Don will share his adventures with us.
This presentation will be of interest to OLLI members who are doing genealogy work as well as to History Club members and their guests. All are welcome.
