The next meeting of the Board of Directors will be held in Loudoun at the Signal Hill location on Friday April 21, 2017 (Room 209, Mason-in-Loudoun 21335 Signal Hill Plaza, Sterling VA), 10:00‒12:00. It will be preceded at 9:30 by a social to meet the 2017 Board candidates. All members are welcome.
Following the Board meeting on April 21, there will be a Super Salad Social in Reston 12:30‒2:30 (Rose Gallery, Reston Community Center‒Lake Anne, 1609 Washington Plaza, North, Reston, VA). Board candidates will participate in a question-and-answer panel.

Looking for Literary Roundtable Alums By Carol Henderson, Literary Roundtable Co-moderatorThe Literary Roundtable, an OLLI short-story discussion class that has been operating since 1999 at Reston’s Used Book Shop, will celebrate a milestone next month. Janice Dewire and Carol Henderson will wrap up 15 years as moderators of this course. Hello, Art! Looking Good—or at Least Interesting By John Nash, E-News Weekly Editor TeamUnderstanding modern art can be a challenge, but for those who took Susan Rudy’s three-week class on Art since the 1950s at the National Gallery—well, we have a better appreciation of it, although understanding can still be a challenge.Susan has been a docent at the National Gallery of Art for 18 years, since retiring from the CIA. She is trained to give guided tours in all the galleries in the museum (e.g., French Impressionists, Renaissance, American, Modern) and has shared her love of art and her expertise with OLLI members in other art courses.During the course, Susan introduced modern art from the 1960s to the present, including artists such as Pollock, Caldwell, Rothko, Warhol, and others. Types of art discussed included abstraction, optical, and kinetic, with examples to illustrate the artists’ intent. She identified key attributes in contemporary works, illustrated treatments of traditional themes, and indicated unconventional materials and techniques used. “This was a wonderful way for me to begin to get a grasp on modern art, a subject that has simply baffled me,” said one attendee.The last class was a bus trip to the newly renovated East Wing of the National Gallery of Art. Because of the number of attendees, there were two bus trips, April 10 and 11, both “shepherded” by Ann Youngren. Susan took the groups on an extensive tour of the modern exhibits, providing further detail in the museum setting of many items previously seen in the classroom.After lunch and more exhibit touring, everyone boarded the bus back to Fairfax, extending great appreciation to Susan Rudy for sharing her time and talents. “This was a ‘win-win’ situation for me,” said Susan. “I’m presenting what I love to a very appreciative audience.”
Members of OLLI’s Poetry Workshop submitted short poems in haiku for columnist John Kelly’s annual springtime contest in The Washington Post. Of these, one by Mike Mc Namara and one by Susan Bennett were published as Kelly’s “other favorites” after the winner. The haiku ran in the Metro section on Monday, April 3.

Roxanne Cramer, OLLI member since fall 2004, died last week. She was active in many ways (e.g., leading a discussion group at an annual town hall meeting, serving as a staff writer for OLLI E‑News, participating in Readers' Theater, teaching or coordinating classes—such as Acting for Fun in winter term 2017). She was an inspiration to her students, and her many friends at OLLI will miss her buoyant spirit.
A memorial service is tentatively scheduled for mid-June at the Unitarian-Universalist Congregation of Fairfax in Oakton/Vienna, VA; E‑News will provide details as they become available.
