Alerts & Notices

  • Annual Business Meeting and Picnic, Tallwood, Friday, May 5, 10:00 (meeting: OLLI programming and operations; hear from Board candidates) and 11:00 (picnic). Register here for Special Event 1104; please bring a dish to share based on last name ‒ salad (A‑G), side dish (H-O), or dessert (P-Z).
  • Reminder: The 2017 election for new members of the Board of Directors will be May 5‑19. Pictures and biographical information on Board candidates are available on the OLLI website at this link.
  • Note: The summer 2017 catalog will be available online at the OLLI website soon.
  • Correction: Moving fast doesn't always produce the desired results. As the author of the April 14 E‑News article, Hello, Art! Looking Good‒or at Least Interesting, I moved too fast and misspelled the names of artist Mark Rothko and art observer Valerie Stucky in the photo caption. I apologize for the errors. --John Nash, E‑News writer

Art and Music Program Planning - Call for Help

By Ann Youngren, Co-chair, Art and Music Program Planning Group

Do you volunteer at a museum, historic house, or public building that displays art? Did you work in a building that housed art available for public viewing? Have you been impressed by a recent exhibit or museum? If you nodded affirmatively to any of these questions, the Art and Music Program planning group needs your help! We are eager to make contact with these organizations to arrange field trips as well as possible presentations at our Tallwood, Reston, and/or Loudoun campuses. Please contact Ann Youngren at: 703-437-1150 or rayoungren@verizon.net.

April Is National Poetry Month

By Jan Bohall, Co-moderator of the Poetry Workshop

To celebrate, members of the Poetry Workshop will read samples of their work on Friday, April 28th, at 1:00 at Tallwood. An open mike will give other OLLI members a chance to read a poem of their own. If you would like to present a poem, please contact either Jan Bohall (703-273-1146 or jbohall@verizon.net) or Mike Mc Namara (703-644-4096 or wefolk1@verizon.net).

Register now for the Poetry Reading via the OLLI member portal (special event 981) at this link.

Foreign Parts

If — when a heart is transplanted,

its donor’s soul transplants too,

creates a new, a better, a worse, being,

no one has tried to discover.

Maybe because a new heart

is a new miracle—enough.

Enough that the heart beats,

allows life for its new owner.

If — no one knows what happens

with our glorious hearts,

how can I ever know if the tiny bits

of cadaver bone fusing in my neck

to my own bone will devise a new me,

Would I know it if they did?

— Betty Smith
