Due to major maintenance and tree trimming, the Tallwood facility is closed to staff and members from May 21 to 25. Make-up classes will be held as scheduled at other venues in Fairfax, Loudoun, and Reston. Please mail your summer‑term registrations to OLLI, and do not come to campus.
OLLI Photographers’ Works Selected By John Nash, OLLI E-News Writer and Weekly Editor Team MemberPhotographs by six OLLI members were selected for exhibition in the Eighth Annual Joseph Miller Abstract Photography Exposition. Submissions from George Bradshaw, Dan Feighery, Jean Feighery, Bob Kelberg, Ed Parker, and Tom Simpson were among the 123 photographs selected out of 396 submitted.The opening reception and awards ceremony was held Sunday afternoon, May 6, at the Miller Center in Gainesville, VA. Dan Feighery’s photo (shown) was honored with a Special Merit Award.According to Miller’s criteria, abstracts are non-representational and do not rely upon recognizable subject matter. They are the poetry of photography, free verse written in color and tone-producing feelings of mystery. Abstracts, like other works of art, are felt as well as seen.
"I so enjoy the challenge of searching through the combinations of shapes and colors found in various things to find and capture interesting abstract photos," said Jean Feighery. Jean found “Tire Tracks” captivating.Dan Feighery said, “I was looking at shapes, colors, and texture to see how I could develop them into relationships in one image.” Dan achieved these objectives through a variety of colored foils molded into shapes and textures.“Abstract photography certainly pushes boundaries of visual design for me. It is a learning experience both technically and artistically,” pointed out George Bradshaw. His “Moonrise” shows contrasts in a selected portion of a mouse pad: black and white to the eye, orange when manipulated by camera and post-processing.
The public is invited to view this year’s exhibition of abstract photographs at the Joseph Miller Center for the Photographic Arts in Gainesville, Virginia, from noon to 5:00 on weekends in May, including Memorial Day.

It was a surprise for Dr. Kathryn Hearden on Tuesday, May 15, when many OLLI members attending the Music Sampler “flooded” her with flowers and cards of appreciation. Dr. Kate, professor of vocal studies in Mason’s School of Music and coordinator of the Music Sampler, will be retiring at the end of the spring term at Mason.Dr. Hearden has been the coordinator of the wonderful Music Sampler for the past eight years, arranging extraordinary musical performances for this annual fall and spring program. Most performances are by Mason students and accomplished instructors from the School of Music with a few performances from outside groups, such as those from The President’s Own Marine Band. Dr. Kate and her husband, Marcio Botelho, who also is retiring as senior cellist with The President’s Own Chamber Orchestra, will be relocating to the Williamsburg area. After getting settled, Dr. Hearden will continue her musical contributions, perhaps through a private studio. Former OLLI member Murray Minster died May 2 at home in Vienna. He was one of OLLI’s earliest members, joining in fall term 2002 and continuing for many years. Active and highly respected, he served on the Board of Directors. A celebration of his life was held on May 17 at Westminster. Further information is available at this link.
