Mason Student Scholars

By Jennifer Disano, Executive Director

Every year OLLI Mason provides George Mason University students with scholarship awards as a way of giving back to the university for its steadfast support in facilitating our program. This year there were 23 Mason student scholars, eight of whom are featured here. Congratulations students and thank you to the Friends of OLLI donors for funding this important program!

Tell a Friend about OLLI

By Rosemary Lubinski, Outreach Committee Chair

During the COVID-19 crisis, many of us have reached out to family and friends to keep in touch. Undoubtedly, you have heard from folks you have not seen recently. These calls, emails, and texts are an excellent opportunity for you to tell others about the stimulating experiences you have attending OLLI classes. We have been fortunate that many classes were offered on-line and could be accessed at home and even by those who do not live in our area.

To help OLLI maintain membership, we all need to reach out and tell others about this valuable resource for seniors. Your personal experience with OLLI classes is a powerful and meaningful marketing tool. Tell your friends and family about the scope of class topics and clubs, the interesting discussions, what you learned, and how easy it is to access from the comfort of your home.

Please tell a friend a day and pass on OLLI’s web address (https://ollidev2.earthcare.com) so your friends and family (near and far) can take a look and join the group. You can also give them the web address for the up-to-date summer catalog indicating the online classes: http://ollidev2.earthcare.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/Summer2020-catalog.pdf.

Breakup

You are slowing, dimming, fainting,
your energy flagging. No vitamin
B12 can help you.
No Resveratrol can retard your decline.
No cosmetic surgery can rejuvenate you.
I know you are dying.
Our many years together are ending,
the countless hours in bed delighting,
learning, traveling.
Soon I will be forced to take
up with a new digital gigolo.
I will abandon you
to a foreign trash heap
and fall in love with a Gen7 iPad.

Arts & Music at George Mason

By Shelly Gersten, OLLI E-News Staff Writer

Although Mason’s campus is shut down, they are still producing online entertainment which we can access and enjoy. Dr. Linda Apple Monson produces a periodic “Notes from the Director.” This email is full of interesting online performances by the students and faculty of the School of Music. If you would like to receive these bulletins, just send an email to Brianna Schoen at bschoen@gmu.edu. Also, the Center for the Arts has a website Mason Arts at Home which has a calendar of on-line events.

Meetings & Clubs

Please note: Physical meetings for clubs and activities are canceled until further notice in accordance with Mason’s guidelines. OLLI is conducting its classes and activities online. Refer to the university's coronavirus website for official university updates and check the OLLI Calendar for revised information.

The following list covering the next two weeks is extracted for your convenience from the master online calendar maintained by the office, with direct web links added when available. The list is accurate as of mid-week but for the most up-to-date information, please view the latest forecast of coming events on our website (News/OLLI Calendar). Note: All OLLI members are welcome at, and encouraged to attend (online), meetings of the Board of Directors, committees and resource groups, kick-off coffees, etc. (bolded below).
