OLLI Board says GRAZIE to Our Wonderful Staff
By Martha Powers, Vice President

On May 12, the OLLI Board of Directors gave a thank-you lunch to our dedicated and amazing staffers. Following Michelle Blandburg’s inspired theme of “That’s Amore!,” we enjoyed pizza, gorgeous fresh salads (made by Board members), and unbelievably sumptuous desserts (courtesy of Katheen Pablo). Manny Pablo appeared as Dean Martin; Bill Taylor and Michelle Blandburg oversaw an Italian trivia bingo game; and the group enjoyed videos about Sophia Loren, Lady and the Tramp, and spaghetti growing on trees. Each staff member received a personalized goodie bag as a take-home gift.

Ask Uncle Olli

By Uncle Olli, Etiquette Consultant, Driving Consultant, and everything in between

Uncle Olli has lived long enough that people often ask him various questions, including ones in the matter of etiquette. He is approachable (to take nothing away from Miss Ollie Ettakit) and welcomes your queries: ask  Uncle Olli at ollienewseditor@gmail.com. He is embarrassed by nothing!

Question: You're going to answer me whether I ask or not, aren't you? OK, then. What's the third Golden Rule of OLLI?

Uncle Olli: Glad you asked: Clean up and put your trash in the trash can. You learned this in Kindergarten (didn't you?). Mother is having tea in the Social Room. Pick up your cup, grab a cookie, and join her.

OLLI Latin Class on Ancient Medicine

  By Alana Lukes, Instructor

At the Latin II class meeting on May 11 in the social room annex at Tallwood, OLLI member Rita Way delivered a presentation on ancient medicine, especially during Greek and Roman times. The class had just finished a unit on the practice of medicine in Alexandria, Egypt, during Roman times. The picture, taken by OLLI member and class participant Meta Martin, shows Rita and me, class instructor Alana Lukes.

Poet's Corner

Courtesy of the Poetry Workshop
Cleaning House

Thrilled at last to be retired
and never, ever be required
to wear a business suit or rise
at six a.m. to darkened skies.

I said good-bye to piles of clothes
and threw away confining hose
slacks and shirts, scarves and tops
I gave to thrifts and homeless shops.

When the month-long job was done
I felt my new life had begun
and viewed my closet with delight
like stealing daylight from the night
so clean and bright, so sparse and spare
for hipper styles I’ll dare to wear.

But looking at the highest shelf,
I suddenly felt not myself
Bewildered why I didn’t choose
To rid my life of all those shoes –
I counted more than 30 pairs
Of high heels worn to fine affairs.

A memory from years gone by
seductive sight, I can’t deny
in four-inch heels and mini skirt
walking tall, no ache or hurt.

My mood went through a downward shift
I must confess I felt adrift
lost in thoughts of younger me
and times that could no longer be.

I shook myself – what a fool!
determinedly I grabbed a stool
cleared dusty boxes, one by one
while pond’ring all the things I’d done
until the vexing shoes were cast
into the garbage bags, tied fast.

Except a lovely bridal pair
stored with a dress I’ll never wear.
