Fun Facts to Celebrate OLLI's 25th Anniversary
By Ray Beery, Member, Board of DirectorsFounding member Audrey Markham-Sullivan, profiled in the OLLI E-News of June 30, 2006, remembers the following: having the George Mason University president’s wife, Joanne Johnson, teach a class paid off very well. It led to the university giving the Institute space at Tallwood.

OLLI is celebrating its 25th year of classes for seniors in 2016. We'll be publishing fun facts and interesting milestones about the Institute each week that OLLI E-News is published from now until the end of the fall term, 2016.

845 Socks! OLLI Rocks!

By Martha Powers, Member Services

A heartfelt thank you to all the OLLI members who so kindly donated their unwanted socks for National Lost Sock Memorial Day recently. We collected a whopping 845 socks, which will be used to make Happy Sock catnip toys at the Kids ‘n’ Critters special event (#1101) on July 11. As an aficionado of socks, I was pleased to see so many nice men’s business socks among the contributions. Apparently when folks retire and join OLLI, they give up the suits! Thanks to your generosity, hundreds of homeless (but hopeful) cats at local animal shelters will be enjoying Happy Socks in July.

For more information, please visit www.ohappysock.blogspot.com

Martha Powers (aka the "Happy Sock Lady") and spokescat Dipper (nude model for the Operation Happy Sock logo) show off the mountain of socks donated by OLLI members.

Poet's Corner

Ranger School Graduation, Ft. Benning, Georgia

At last, and suddenly released,
This camouflaged stampede
Surrounded in thunder and shouts,
Flowed across the rise and fall
Of the close-cropped school lawn.
Free, free, and ready to be alone at last
With the understanding of what they’d done
And maybe, what they hadn’t.

So I pinned on our son’s Ranger tab twenty years
From the time that I had mine in ‘60.
I hope to be there sometime soon
To do the same for our first grandson. For
There are those who have heard of the way,
Those that think they know the way,
And Rangers, who will lead the way.
