New Leadership in Member Services!

By Martha Powers, Board of Directors Member

After more than three years as chair of OLLI’s Member Services Committee, I’m stepping down so that I can focus more effort on teaching at OLLI. The longstanding vice chair of Member Services, Toni Acton, will take over. To say that she is well suited for this job is an understatement.

As I also relinquish my role as chair of the Social Events Subcommittee, Toni and I agree that the ideal new manager of OLLI’s popular Tallwood parties will be Jim Dunphy. He’s been Santa at our past three Christmas in July parties, as well as a major organizer and supporter of many OLLI events.

Please join me in thanking Toni and Jim for taking on these responsibilities and helping to make our OLLI a great place for social opportunities as well as lifelong learning.

Interested in Language, Literature, and Theater?

By Rala Stone, Program Planning Group Co-Chair

The Language, Literature and Theater Program Planning Group is meeting on July 2 at 1:00 in TA-1. We invite all interested OLLI members to join us. We need and appreciate your feedback and any ideas you may have for new classes and/or instructors. Not only will you enjoy being involved in helping to create a strong and challenging program, but you will meet new friends with similar interests. Remember - OLLI is only as strong as it is because of the work and input of its members. So come try it; you’ll like it.

If you cannot make the meeting, but have ideas, feedback, or suggestions for improvement, please contact one of us. Your input is valued.

If It's Connected, It Needs to be Protected! Presented by Bob Gostischa.
This presentation gives updated information on why and how things are connected to the internet, including computers (Windows and Mac), tablets, phones, and the IoT (Internet of Things). Bob Gostischa is touring the East Coast with this in-person presentation for computer and technology interest groups.

Bob will explain the current dangers that we face daily. He'll also share what he uses to keep his computers, smart devices, and other connected things that are a part of the IoT secure.

Norbert 'Bob' Gostischa, after a successful career in banking, enjoys retirement as an enthusiast IT security expert, most notably for Avast Software, and as creator of Avast antivirus software and related products. The Avast website has a discussion and help forum, where he has been helping with security-related and general computer issues since 2004 in more than 35,000 forum interactions. Avast antivirus, currently the most used antivirus software in the world, has more than 400 million users worldwide. You can learn more about Bob's presentations and passions in his Blog and YouTube Channel. Bob is a proud member of the APCUG Speakers Bureau.

Knowing When to Stop

There’s a gas station,
a post office,
a tattoo parlor that once was a general store.
There are the remains of an old mill that burned down in the 50’s,
its wheel intact, creaking one way, then another, in a dry stream bed, when
there’s a breeze.
There are three houses,
no, four,
small, white, clapboard,
porches across front and rear,
and a dollar store,
new.
People passing through say, “Look! Another dollar store.” Ed Sadtler
