Fulbright Scholar Presentations and Conversations

The OLLI Mason Program Committee in collaboration with the Mason Office of Global Strategy has designed the first in a series of Fulbright Scholar Presentations and Conversations with OLLI members. The first special event is planned for January 26 in Reston. The speaker, Fulbright Scholar Daniela Constantin, will give a brief presentation on her research of Bucharest, Romania, land development and Washington, DC, metropolitan area comparisons, followed by a panel discussion featuring several OLLI members, including Reston founder Bob Simon. Bucharest City and Its Metropolitan Area
in the Context of Global Competition.
Lessons From the Greater Washington Metropolitan Area

Abstract
 
The presentation will focus on the responses to global trends that affect East-European regions, offering a case study in Romania, namely that of the Bucharest metropolitan area, conventionally incorporating Bucharest city and the surrounding county of Ilfov. This region is an example of a relative winner in the regional competition at the global scale, with Bucharest—the capital of Romania—as one of the most attractive cities for foreign investors in Central and Eastern Europe. With this aim in view, the presentation will address the economy of the region, its functional specialization, the global trends that affect it, the specific responses to global trends, including policy aspects, and will highlight the factors supporting the benefits of globalization as well as those that are impeding the capture of these benefits. A special discussion will be devoted to the contribution of the Bucharest metropolitan area to the regeneration of its external hinterland, considering the big development gap that exists between them. The analysis is based on both statistical data and qualitative research undertaken at the international and national scales. In the final part, some lessons from the Washington metropolitan area will be brought into discussion, especially in relation to the economic development strategy, its integration with land use planning, and the choices regarding the use of the city-owned real properties in order to increase local revenues, deliver quality public services, and stimulate overall economic development of the region.

OLLI Ink Seeks Submissions

OLLI Ink, OLLI's annual literary journal, is looking for submissions for the 2015 issue. The deadline is Feb 15, 2015.

We hope to have an online issue for those pieces we don’t have room for in the hard-copy journal.  So submit as many pieces as you like. Prose—fiction, personal essays, and memoirs—should be no longer than 2,500 words, and poetry no longer than 30 lines if you want to be considered for the hard copy edition. If your work is too long for the hard-copy journal or if you submit more than one piece, we’ll try to publish you online.

Please note that all rights stay with the authors.

Email your entries to me (bsmith5000@verizon.net) by Feb 15, and let me know if you have any questions.

Book Panel: Russ Roberts, author of How Adam Smith Can Change Your Life, joins Mason economics professors Peter Boettke and Daniel Klein and Marquette University political science professor Ryan Hanley to discuss his latest book. Roberts contends that Adam Smith’s insights into human nature are just as relevant today as they were 300 years ago. What does it take to be truly happy? Should we pursue fame and fortune or the respect of our friends and family? How can we make the world a better place? When Roberts finally picked up Adam Smith’s Theory of Moral Sentiments, he realized he’d stumbled upon what might be the greatest self-help book that almost no one has read.
