The Reston Program Committee meeting will be held on Tuesday,
January 24, from 9:40–11:00 at the United Christian Parish. Although OLLI will be back in session, no classes are scheduled in Reston at that time. We will review fall courses, and, most important, start planning for summer and fall 2017. We need everyone’s good ideas. Last week a lot of good ideas emerged at the Language, Literature, and Theatre planning meeting and we are hoping for the same results.
In other Reston news, the new (as of fall) Reston Book Club has had several lively meetings with more to follow. Co-founders Nancy Scheeler and Luci Martel describe the club’s purpose as “focusing on serious contemporary fiction, primarily—but not limited to—works by American or U.K. authors.” Finally, be it noted that all OLLI members, whatever your preferred campus may be, are welcome at Reston events.
OLLI Ink, OLLI’s annual literary journal, is looking for submissions for the 2017 issue. The deadline is February 20, 2017, one week after the end of OLLI’s winter term.
Submit as many pieces as you like. Prose—fiction, personal essays, and memoir—should be no longer than 2,500 words, and poetry no longer than 30 lines if you want to be considered for the hard-copy edition. If your work is too long for the hard-copy journal or if you submit more than one piece, we will try to have an online edition in which space won’t be a problem. All rights remain with the authors.

Reston and Loudoun: Recycle Your Prescription Bottles

From now until Friday, February 3, Member Services is offering a prescription-bottle recycling program at Reston and Loudoun, as well as at Tallwood. Please bring your empty bottles with caps (whether or not they’re child-resistant) and with the labels removed (most peel off easily, or may be persuaded with Goo-Gone solvent, a hair dryer‒or a warm cat?). You can deposit your donations in the box provided in the social area at Loudoun, or in Reston at the Reston Community Center during Wednesday classes and the United Christian Parish on Thursday afternoons.
The bottles will be collected regularly and taken to Burke Presbyterian Church, which is donating them to Matthew 25 Ministries (www.M25M.org). This worthy charity (accredited by the BBB and favorably reviewed by Charity Navigator) will ship the bottles to needy countries in Africa, or recycle them in the US to help finance humanitarian efforts.

I saw Swan Lake this afternoon, performed by Russian dancers
The leaps! The spins! The hang time heights! It truly was a marvel!
Like many feats beyond my reach I'll add this to the pile
Of things hopelessly beyond my grasp, never to be mastered.
So early on I knew for fact I'd never be a dancer—
Dancers can kick above their head.
My foot has never risen higher than
My waist, unless you count that time in gym
That everyone agreed, as one, never to remember.
Good? I was never good, and yet if honest must accept
That age, poor diet, atrophy, they all conspire as one—
I never will be better than the man I am today.
We do not all accomplish what we wish for in our youth
Thank goodness! For our wishes are not wise if truth
Be told.
Yet we hold in admiration those who with tenacious grit
Still manage to, (I don't know how they do it)
Grow old.
Old and slow is better
Than young and quick and dead.
