OLLI Ink Submissions Due
By Betty Smith, OLLI Ink EditorOLLI Ink, OLLI’s annual literary journal, is looking for submissions for our 2018 issue. The deadline is February 25, about a week after the end of the winter term. You don’t have to be a previously published or experienced writer to submit your work.Submit as many pieces as you like. Prose—fiction, personal essays, and memoir—should be no longer than 2,500 words, and poetry no longer than 30 lines if you want to be considered for the hard-copy edition. If your work is too long for the hard-copy journal or if you submit more than one piece, we plan to have an online edition in which space won’t be a problem. All rights remain with the authors.

Please email your entries to me at bsmith5000@verizon.net by February 25. Let me know if you have any questions or if you need more time.

Your Spring Catalog Coming Soon!

By Sheri Siesseger, Publications Committee Chair

The OLLI Mason spring-term catalog is off to the printer. It includes more than 200 offerings, making it very large. Expect to set aside more time than usual choosing your courses and events!

The sheer volume of this edition also made producing it a huge undertaking for the catalog staff. I want to thank editor Leti Labell for tackling the job with grace and a sense of humor. Thanks also to our proofreaders Joan Axilbund, Mary Branch, Doris Bloch, Rebecca Jann, Irene Osterman, Martha Powers and Susan Van Hemel. As always, Leigh Knox, OLLI site assistant for Loudoun, provided essential help in managing the content and formatting the end product.

We need volunteers to edit future catalogs. If you are interested in learning more, please contact me: sheri.siesseger@gmail.com.

Poet's Corner

Silence

Rustling leaves answer a passing breeze
the soft crack of a stepped-on twig
the slight purr of a very small stream
faint faraway fluting of a wood thrush
my breaths as I sit here alone
alone, unmoving, easing
each tiny muscle, tendon, nerve
hearing each word

Cooking Column

Shrimp Sriracha: A Recipe You Won’t Forget!

What’s better on a cold day than a glass of wine, a good book, and crackers and a dish of shrimp sriracha to warm you up. The first recipe of the Cooks’ Column is submitted by Jean Boltz, a good cook who appreciates simple but tasty dishes. Jean has prepared this dish for many years (not the same shrimp) and has always received rave reviews. Give the recipe a try and join Jean in taking bows. Good taste and simplicity can go hand in hand.

The cooking column is intended to be an occasional feature. If you wish to contribute your favorite original recipe, please forward it with a brief note about the recipe, a personal photo, and perhaps a glamour shot of your creation to ollienewseditor@gmail.com. Deadline for recipe submissions is 6:00 on Monday prior to publication.
