Alerts & Notices

- There are still some open OLLI classes, so plan to expand your summer's activities by signing up for one of these. Watch for the OLLI E-Blasts for available classes.

- You can still purchase your copy of The Story of OLLI: Celebrating 25 Years of the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at George Mason University. This book documents in beautiful pictures and prose the dramatic success story of LRI and OLLI since 1991. For the low price of just $25, buy one for you or as a gift for your favorite OLLI friend! You will be notified when books become available during summer 2016. Just go to the OLLI website at ollidev2.earthcare.com and click on the book cover.

- Don't forget, if you make a designated gift contribution of $100 or more between May 6 and July 15, 2016, to the 25th anniversary fund for the Office of Military Services, a very generous benefactor will match your donation. What a fantastic chance for you to make a significant impact on bridging those financial gaps that occur in everyday life which interrupt the education of our brave Mason veterans who gave so much to our country! Go to the OLLI website at ollidev2.earthcare.com and make your donation.

Travel Club

By Alice Slayton Clark, Communications Associate/Registrar

Globetrotters take heed - the OLLI Travel Club is in immediate need of a coordinator. If you, like so many OLLI members, are a bird of passage who enjoys talking and sharing stories about adventures far and wide, please consider not only joining this club, but taking the lead!

The Travel Club meets monthly to discuss exciting domestic and international opportunities, with members sharing a wealth of knowledge about traveling and living around the world. Members not only plan trips together, they also undertake many day excursions to fascinating historic homes and museums, such as the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, Montpelier, and the Naval Academy. As coordinator, you are guaranteed to have a major impact on the wonderful wanderings to be offered!

Several months ago, the club coordinator stepped down after many years of service to allow another OLLI member the opportunity to take the helm. The position is yet to be filled. Unfortunately, until that happens, this club has suspended its meetings and may be forced to disband.

Please consider volunteering your leadership and getting this fun club back on the road again.

Doctor Who Club

By Wendy Campbell, Board of Directors

At the end of the Doctor Who class several members indicated an interest in forming a Doctor Who Club. This summer we began meeting at Tallwood on Friday afternoons on June 10 with subsequent sessions planned for June 24, and July 8 and 22. We are showing the opening episodes for each of the New Who Doctors: “Rose" (Chris Eccleston) shown on June 10; "The Christmas Invasion" (David Tennant) scheduled for June 24; "The Eleventh Hour" (Matt Smith) scheduled for July 8; and "Deep Breath" (Peter Capaldi) scheduled for July 22. We start at 1:00 pm and the group discusses the episodes after we have watched them. If there is interest in seeing other material directly connected to the episodes, I will be glad to pull some together, as I did for the original class.

Please contact Wendy Campbell (neoblivis@earthlink.net) for more information or if you are interested in attending.

Inside OLLI-Mason

Rita E. Way - New OLLI Board Member

There is an old cliché, “When one door closes, another door opens." In the winter of 2014, a door closed on my life in Philadelphia with the loss of my dear husband, Jim, after 25 years of marriage. I then moved to Fairfax to live closer to my daughter and OLLI’s door opened for me. I guess you can say I ran through the door and before I knew it, I was serving on five committees (Development, HSS, STH, Outreach and Liaison). Now, I’m a weekly volunteer in the staff office, and have taught and coordinated courses on the History of Medicine and Consider the Conversation.
What I love most about OLLI is having the opportunity to leave one’s comfort zone and take on challenges that help me grow. For me, one of these challenges is being an OLLI instructor. Teaching two courses on the History of Medicine this past year has been extremely rewarding for me and has been a great way to meet new members. I hope to be able to create and continue teaching for many semesters. I have truly enjoyed working in the staff office. Volunteering there has given me a real appreciation for how hard our staff works to keep OLLI’s wheels turning.
During my term as a board member, I look forward to helping expand OLLI’s outreach program both with Mason and the outside community. Presently, I am working with Bill Taylor to develop a mentor program between OLLI and Mason. I would also like to see OLLI reach out to the elderly population who live in facilities and are too frail or handicapped to take courses on-site by offering some electronic classes to help enrich their lives and keep their minds active.

When not at OLLI, my leisure time is spent with family, friends, attending concerts and cultural events, and exploring my new home town.

A Light Shining in the Darkness

Jack Arthur Underhill

For every person in despair
There should be a small light shining in the darkness:
A parent answering the wails
Of a small child in distress,
A friend who calls
When you have lost the one you love.

We are all interconnected
In a web of competition, conceit, deceit
Loving, caring, sharing,
And we need each other
In moments of vulnerability.

People who have a wide network of friends
Live longer, are happier, healthier and more caring.
Only mushrooms, bats and owls love the dark
And shun the light.

Will you be my light?
