Inside OLLI-Mason

Understanding the OLLI Budget –
Part One: Revenue

By Paul Howard, Board Member and OLLI Finance Committee Member

Ed. Note: This is part one of a series of six articles on the OLLI budget, prepared by the Finance Committee to provide insight into the OLLI budget process for E‑News readers.

The figure below shows the major sources of OLLI revenue for this year.

The revenue side of OLLI's budget is quite simple, consisting of five line items, projected to total $604,425 for calendar year 2017. Membership dues income at the introductory rate is projected to be $20,000; at the full dues rate, $498,525. The Osher Foundation has established an endowment of $2 million in the George Mason University Foundation for the benefit of OLLI. The endowment will provide revenue for OLLI of $85,500 this year, or about $73 for each OLLI full-dues member. Two other line items – Dividend and Interest Income, and Special Event & Other Income, total only $400, an amount too small to appear in the figure.

The Next Stephen Sondheim???
By Martha Powers, Member, Board of DirectorsIf you missed the hugely entertaining OLLI class presented by 20-year-old Alex Bulova on June 16, you can still catch one of the premier performances of his latest creation, “The Complete History of Fairfax: The Musical.”Alex won a very prestigious award at last year’s DC Fringe Festival for another of his musicals, so we’re lucky we can enjoy his production of this specially created musical about our city’s 275th anniversary. If the Bulova name rings a bell, it’s because Alex is the eldest child of David and Gretchen Bulova. (David represents the 37th district in the Virginia House of Delegates, and his wife Gretchen is chair of the Fairfax 275th Anniversary Committee.) Alex’s grandmother is Fairfax Board of Supervisors Chair Sharon Bulova. You can still snag tickets to this very affordable musical show at one of the following:
https://www.eventbrite.com/e/the-complete-history-of-fairfax-the-musical-tickets-33287877939
(July 6-8 in Falls Church for $10).
http://www.workhousearts.org/event/complete-history-fairfax-musical/2017-07-14/
(July 13-15 at Lorton Workhouse for $12).Someday you may not be able to afford a ticket to Alex Bulova’s latest hit musical, so grab this chance to catch a rising star, and learn more about the history of Fairfax to boot!

Calling All Language, Literature, and Theater Enthusiasts!!
By Rala Stone, Program Planning Group Co-chairThere will be a meeting of the Language/Literature/Theater Program Planning Committee on Monday, July 10, 1:00 in TA-1.To ensure that our program continues to grow and improve we need your help. Come join us as we look back on the spring and summer classes, preview what's on deck for the fall and—most importantly—plan for the winter and spring terms. Part of the fun of belonging to a volunteer organization is getting involved with people with whom you share common interests and pride in a program that you have helped to build. We are looking for your ideas for new classes and your contacts who might be willing to teach a class. We encourage you to bring an OLLI friend who you know has an interest in these areas. If you cannot be present at the meeting but have suggestions or new ideas, please contact any members of the committee. We look forward to seeing you at the meeting.

Food Donations During Christmas in July
By Martha Powers, Member, Board of DirectorsPlease help us restock the food pantry at Britepaths!
Donate canned meat the week of July 10–14.
Our second annual “Christmas in July” celebration will be held July 14 at Tallwood (TA-1). Collection boxes will also be available at Reston UCP and Loudoun in the coffee/cookie areas. Remember: canned meat ONLY (due to space constraints).Your donation will help Britepaths (formerly Our Daily Bread) in Fairfax, which helps deserving families in our area. If you want to donate other items, a Britepaths collection van will be in the front parking lot at Tallwood to accept additional donations from 9:00 to 1:00 on Friday, July 14. On July 14 only, your donation of these other items at Tallwood will be very welcome:

  • Rice
  • Flour
  • Sugar
  • Jam/jelly
  • Fruit cups/apple sauce cups
  • Granola bars and healthy individually wrapped snacks
  • Pancake mix and syrup
  • Paper towels
  • Diapers (all sizes) and baby wipes
  • Laundry detergent
  • Cleaning supplies
  • Deodorant

Excuse Me, Ma'am, There Is Stardust in Your Soup

Jack A. Underhill

An article in the New York Times described how
stardust was identified in roof gutters in Norway
by John Larsen, a jazz guitarist,
the founder of Hot Club de Norvege.
William Broad. March 10, 2017

That is not a fly in your soup, Ma'am.
Nothing to worry about.
That's merely stardust
A tiny remnant of the solar system's birth
Or, lately, in the last five billion years
The detritus of smashups
Among planets and asteroids.

Ten tons a day
Tin travelers from our solar system
And beyond
Shower down on our earth.
Invisible to the
Even discerning naked eye.

We inhale it.
We eat it on lettuce.
It is present hiding in our drains.
It has been coming down for
Billions of years.

We are part of the Whole,
Citizens of the cosmos
With undreamed dimensions
And untold possibilities
With terrestrial roots
And dreams even beyond the stars.

There is stardust in your soup.

Obituary: Robert (Bob) Miller Whitbread

Bob Whitbread, OLLI member since fall term 2001, died June 13, 2017. With a love of history, sports, and travel, as well as his family and friends at OLLI, he especially enjoyed history and current events courses, OLLI travel (e.g., the OLLI trip to Las Vegas and the southwestern Utah National Parks in April 2014), wine trips, and history travel (e.g., the OLLI trip to Montpelier, James Madison's home in Orange, Virginia). Other members remember his dignity and friendly presence, often standing near the door before classes to greet and visit with classmates as they arrived. He was recognized nationally for a distinguished career in service to our country.

A memorial service will be held at Christ Church in Alexandria, VA on Friday, June 30, at 3:00. Additional information may be found at this link.
