Help a Hungry Mason Student

By Toni Acton, Chair, Member Services Committee

Our OLLI regularly supports local community service organizations. This summer, we are asking OLLI members to contribute to the Patriot Pantry at George Mason University—a food bank that helps hungry students in need.

From Monday, July 2, through Friday, July 13 (1:00 cut-off), we will have a collection box in the Social Room at Tallwood. We welcome the following donations:

  • Canned protein (tuna, chicken, meats)
  • Rice, pasta and pasta sauce
  • Bagged nut mixes, trail mix, and snacks
  • Body wash, shampoo, lotion, toothpaste, deodorant

Please help us make this event a tremendous success!

Seeking a Bass Player

By Nancy Riley, Tallwood Trio Vocalist

OLLI’s own Tallwood Trio is looking for a bass player who can join the group on a temporary basis. Our bassist, Eric Henderson, is a bit under the weather. While we expect him to make a full recovery, we have some gigs coming up in the next couple of months and would appreciate someone stepping in. If you are interested, or if you know someone who plays and is available during the daytime, please give Alan Wenberg a call at 703-690-4629. Thank you!

Poet's Corner

I Was There at the Cosmic Dawn

I was there with the coming
Of the first cosmic dawn
When the first stars
Burst into flame
Formed from a fog
Of helium and hydrogen
Created in the first three minutes
Some 14 billion years ago.

I was there to see
Billions upon billions
Of stars
Swirling in galaxies,
Whirlpools in the universe.

I was there when our
Small earth was formed
From swirling gases
Over four billion years ago.

I was there when
The moon was created
From a massive
Collision with the earth.
It shone as a reflection
Of the Great Light nearest to us.

I was there when
Our children were born,
In the first minutes,
Small stars in the chain of creation
And re-creation.
