Custom ringtones for your cell phone
How to create/compose/record/rip sounds for your smart phone

By Paul Howard, OPCUG Program Chair

The Computer Club (OLLI Personal Computer User Group, or OPCUG) will meet with its partner, the Potomac Area Technology and Computer Society (PATACS), on Saturday, July 21, at Tallwood. Join us at 12:30 for socializing in the Annex. Program activities begin at 1:00 in TA‑1.

Custom Ringtones for Your Cell Phone, Presented by John Krout
See how you can use your smart phone and computer to create custom ringtones for Android and Apple smart phones. See a demo of three free products to do this: the MuseScore and Audacity computer applications, and the Sony Audio Recorder app for smart phones.

Why make a custom ringtone?

  • You want a ringtone that is gentler and less obtrusive than any standard pre-installed ringtone.
  • You want a ringtone that is louder and more insistent than a standard pre-installed ringtone.
  • You want a ringtone that announces the name of the caller.
  • It's fun to make custom ringtones and amaze your family and friends with them.
  • You want to use it as notification for alarm clock and calendar events on your smart phone.

About the presenter: John Krout, a former president of WACUG (a predecessor of PATACS), produced over 30 DVDs of student concerts and stage plays between 2004 and 2009, including CD quality digital audio. He has created roughly 200 custom ringtones for his smart phone. He has presented talks on Geocaching and How to Create Month-Per-Page Calendars at recent PATACS meetings over the past 13 months.

See full details on this meeting by clicking here. For information on the Computer Club, see the OPCUG website. OPCUG dues of $5 for 2018 will be collected at this meeting.

Can't make the meeting in person? Dues-paid club members may attend via Zoom's cloud meeting service, beginning at 12:45. Send a message to webinarhosts@patacs.org if you plan to attend in this way. Join from PC, Mac, Linux, iOS or Android: https://zoom.us/j/2080042114.

The Tom Swift Squad Needs You!

Interested in technology? Learn with us!

By Paul Howard, Audiovisual Support Committee Chair

OLLI’s Audiovisual Support Committee (a.k.a. The Tom Swift Squad) seeks additional volunteers to help ensure the smooth employment of OLLI's audiovisual resources. Our primary mission is to help instructors, liaisons, and staff with any audiovisual issues that might arise during the classes we attend.

We'll be meeting at 2:00 on Wednesday, July 18, at Tallwood in TA‑3. Our activities for this meeting will include training on OLLI's AV equipment used in classrooms and remote locations. We'll be discussing future equipment arrangements, including 14 new wireless mic systems, and reviewing our materials for volunteer and staff training.

Please let me know if you're planning to attend or would like to become a "Swiftie," even if you can't attend this meeting. Contact me by email (preferred) or phone (703-860-9246).

For more information on the Audiovisual Support Committee, see its web page.

Seeking a Bass Player
By Nancy Riley, Tallwood Trio VocalistReminder: OLLI’s own Tallwood Trio is looking for a bass player who can join the group on a temporary basis. Our bassist, Eric Henderson, is a bit under the weather. While we expect him to make a full recovery, we have some gigs coming up in the next couple of months and would appreciate someone stepping in. If you are interested, or if you know someone who plays and is available during the daytime, please give Alan Wenberg a call at 703-690-4629. Thank you!

Literary Potpourri Instructor Book
By Kathryn Mitchell, Co-Chair, Literature, Theater, and Writing/Languages Program Planning GroupOLLI members who attended the winter session of Literary Potpourri might remember John Gilstrap’s wonderfully entertaining presentation on his books dealing with Jonathan Grave, hostage rescue operator. I thought you might like to know that his latest book, pictured here, has now been released by the publisher.
