Alerts & Notices

  • OLLI will be closed for summer break August 3-14. Staff will return to work remotely Monday, August 17.
  • The OLLI Fall Term catalog is online here now. Priority registration will begin August 18 and end August 26.
  • Fall term is September 21 – November 13.
  • The next issue of OLLI E-News will be published Friday, August 14; regular deadline for submission of items is Tuesday, August 11, at 6:00.
  • Correction: In the OLLI E-News issue dated July 24, the article Theater Tidbits incorrectly rendered the names of two Wolf Trap summer offerings. They should have appeared as “Virtual Happy Hours” and “Drive In” musical shows, with the formal names bearing initial capital letters indicating that they are official Wolf Trap offerings.

From the Desk of the Executive Director

By Jennifer Disano, Executive Director

On January 28, OLLI provided drinks and pizza for Mason facilities personnel—the plumbers, electricians, carpenters, HVAC mechanics, and grounds crew that maintain Tallwood. Our usual May picnic for the facilities team and other Mason folks that support OLLI was canceled by COVID. We missed our annual opportunity to shake hands and say thanks. Here are some images of facilities folks picking up pizzas and drinks for each shop. They were so happy!

Computer Club

3rd Saturday, August 15 via Zoom
The Carrington Event
Routine Computer Maintenance

By Paul Howard, OPCUG Program Chair

The Computer Club (OLLI Personal Computer User Group, or OPCUG) will meet with its partner, the Potomac Area Technology and Computer Society (PATACS), on Saturday, August 15 via Zoom. Program activities begin at 1:00.

The Carrington Event, presented by Brian Slawski. In the summer of 1859, an especially powerful sun storm unleashed effects experienced across the span of the earth. The Carrington Event, as it’s now commonly known, transfixed public attention and also elicited greater understanding of the relationship between the earth and the sun, and of the risks that solar storms can pose to electrical infrastructure. This eclectic talk discusses the Carrington Event itself, the physical phenomena involved, its historical and scientific context, and the implications of the event for the present day.

Brian Slawski serves as Vice President and Programs Chair of the Burke Historical Society. He has worked as a utility patent examiner at the US Patent and Trademark Office since 2007. Before that, he worked in Charlottesville as an engineer for a start-up developing a new vapor deposition process. He holds a bachelor's degree in chemical engineering from the University of Virginia.

Learn in 30: Routine Computer Maintenance, presented by Lorrin Garson. Is routine maintenance necessary? How often? Should backup be part of regular maintenance? What about software updates? Do you need anti-malware software? How full is your disk drive and does that matter? Is your computer running hot? What about those dust bunnies, ventilation, and cable discipline? Do you need to lubricate the bearings in your hard drive? Should you replace your old computer if it still works?

See full details on this meeting by clicking here.  For information on the Computer Club, see the OPCUG website. OPCUG dues are $5 for 2020—see  http://olligmu.org/opcug/comm.html for details on making payment.

Attend via Zoom's cloud meeting service, beginning at 12:45.  Please click the following link to join the webinar: https://zoom.us/j/93730244342 or enter this Webinar ID from 'Join' in the Zoom app: 937 3024 4342.

Poet's Corner

Courtesy of the Poetry Workshop

Yesteryear
By Chitra Mohla

Through the misty veil of yesteryear
Sepia colored images appear
Floating into the cerebral hemisphere;

Sancho the sullen donkey
We greeted with glee
Came with a saddle
Stubbornly refused a straddle;

Playing in the bamboo grove
Nature’s treasure trove
Bumblebee lives in memoriam
We buried in a leafy praetorium;

A pair of white bunnies
Fluffy, funny, fuzzy
Magically grew to twenty
Cuddly kits had us in a tizzy;

Rover, boisterous, bouncy
White tail, wagging proudly
Romped around us wildly
Hours of playful jollity;

Childhood images of rapture!

Arts & Music at George Mason

By Shelly Gersten, OLLI E-News Staff Writer

Although Mason’s campus is shut down, online entertainment continues for us to access and enjoy. Dr. Linda Apple Monson produces a periodic “Notes from the Director.” This email is full of interesting online performances by the students and faculty of the School of Music. If you would like to receive these bulletins, just send an email to Brianna Schoen at bschoen@gmu.edu. Also, the Center for the Arts has a website Mason Arts at Home which has a calendar of online events.
