Back to Top of Page LRI/OLLI Founder Kathryn Brooks By Carol Henderson, E-News Contributing Writer As OLLI heads toward its 25th anniversary next year, it seems appropriate to remember some of our early movers and shakers. Here's a piece about LRI/OLLI founder Kathryn Brooks. Learning in Retirement Institute founder Kathryn Brooks was 85 when the Institute opened for classes in 1991. Eight years earlier, as chair of the education committee of the county Commission on Aging, she had been assigned the task of creating an education program for retired people. By 1990 she had persuaded more than two dozen community leaders to back the Institute. She had also persuaded numerous state legislators to help convince an initially reluctant George Mason University to support it. She served as LRI’s first president and taught several courses. She was honored by the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors in appreciation for her community and educational achievements and received the Golden Rule Award from J.C. Penney Co. for establishing LRI. A 1991 Golden Gazette article noted that Kathryn swam a mile on her 85th birthday, something she had accomplished on each of her later birthdays. Perhaps that was one of the secrets of her amazing activism. Beverly George remembers her quick wit and her strong feminism. Another characteristic was her perseverance. She raised four children, went back to college in midlife, receiving both bachelor’s and master’s degrees from American University, started teaching high school in Arlington in her late fifties, learned to swim when she was 69 and, in support of the Equal Rights Amendment, swam a mile more than once and walked from Alexandria to Richmond. Initially the location for LRI’s first classes at Mason’s Commerce II building was called the Kathryn Brooks Center. LRI moved to Tallwood, and in 2008 the Tallwood facility was named the Kathryn Brooks Education Center at Tallwood. The first of a series of lectures honoring Kathryn was attended by one hundred people. Kathryn Brooks passed away the following year, 1996. We’ll be publishing fun facts and interesting milestones about the Institute each week that OLLI E-News is published from now through the end of the fall term, 2016. Back to Top of Page Inside OLLI-Mason OLLI Photography Club: Opportunities for Creativity and Learning By Susan Van Hemel, E-News Contributing Writer and Photography Club Member Do you like to take pictures? Have a new camera you’re trying to figure out? The OLLI Photography Club is the place for you! The club has been active since at least 2007, according to Dan Feighery, the founder and current coordinator. We welcome any and all OLLI members with an interest in photography, from those wanting to take better snapshots to advanced hobbyist photographers. The club meets twice a month at Tallwood. On the second Friday we have a meeting with a speaker, usually a noted photographer/ photography teacher from the DC metro area. Presentations range widely across photographic specialties and techniques, and many speakers offer opportunities to sign up for their classes, workshops, and field trips. At these meetings we also vote to select a “Photo of the Month” from entries submitted by club members. The winning photos appear in OLLI E-News, and all entries can be viewed at our online gallery, http://www.pbase.com/olligmuphoto/. On the third Friday of most months we arrange field trips by carpool from Tallwood to local sites that provide great photographic opportunities, like Washington, D.C., monuments and public buildings, the McKee-Beshers Wildlife Management Area (acres of sunflowers!), the Franciscan Monastery, and Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens. On the fourth Friday there is a technical meeting, where members gather to discuss technical issues, critique photos, and share problem-solving ideas. Club members also have two photography exhibits at Tallwood each year (typically in the fall and winter terms), and have often provided illustrations for OLLI E-News articles. We invite you to view our fall 2015 exhibit, now hanging in the social room annex. We encourage you to attend a meeting, meet our members, and hear an interesting presentation!
