Do you love to eat? Are you interested in learning about foods from other cultures? The DC area has an abundance of ethnic restaurants. We’re forming a new OLLI club to meet for lunch on a regular basis to explore new cuisines. Does this sound like your cup of tea (or chai or té or thé)? Also, we’ll have an informal meeting on Friday, September 22, right after the Fairfax Fall Term Kickoff Coffee. Come to TA-1 at 10:00 to meet new members, and then join us afterwards to help plan this new club. Bon appétit!
During the summer session, OLLI members donated over 450 empty medicine bottles for Matthew 25 Ministries in Cincinnati, a highly-regarded international humanitarian and disaster relief organization whose motto is: “Caring for A Needy World with The Things We Throw Away.” These bottles will be combined with medical supplies and shipped to developing countries around the world.
Our next collection will be during the winter session. Please wait until then to bring your clean, EMPTY pill bottles (with caps) to OLLI. Our intention is to hold 2 collections a year, during the summer and winter sessions.
Meanwhile, the next National Drug Take Back Day will be October 28, 2017. On that day you will be able to take any leftover medicine to the police station, where it will be disposed of safely.
The Computer Club (OLLI Personal Computer User Group, or OPCUG) will meet with its partner, the Potomac Area Technology and Computer Society (PATACS), on Saturday, September 16, at Tallwood. Socializing in the Annex at 12:30 followed by program at 1:00 in TA‑1.
23 and Me: Discover Your Genetic Blueprint—Geof Goodrum 23 and Me is a commercial service that provides personal genetic analysis services, including reports on ancestry, personal characteristics, and markers for hereditary diseases. Information doesn’t get any more personal than this! Geof Goodrum registered for 23 and Me in June 2016, and will provide an overview of the costs, features, and privacy/health issues related to this service, then tour the website and his personal genetic reports. Is Geof likely to go bald? Attend this meeting to find out!
Geof previously presented highlights from the January 2017 International Consumer Electronics Show. An active user-group volunteer since 1985, he is a founding member on the PATACS Board of Directors and Co-Editor of the PATACS Posts newsletter.
Learn in 30: Bike Riding for Techies and All Others—Lorrin Garson
What does cycling have to do with computers and related topics? Practically nothing! But there is a growing interest in bike riding, particularly among the “chronologically gifted” who are taking up the activity—especially with the popularity of electric-assist bike motors.
Lorrin has cycled over 26,000 miles since retiring in 2004 and will share his experience and knowledge of the topic.

The Tallwood Book Club will meet at Tallwood on Wednesday, September 13, at 10:00. The book for discussion is Make Your Home Among Strangers by award-winning Latino author Jennine Capo Crucet. It tells the story of Lizet Ramerez, a Cuban-American first-generation college student from a working-class Miami neighborhood. She attends an elite private college in upstate New York. It was a New York Times Editors Choice book and the 2016 International Latino Book Award winner. The book is the 2017 selection for Mason Reads (masonreads.gmu.edu). The author will be speaking at the Center for the Arts on Thursday, October 12, at 4:30 as part of the Fall for the Book festival (www.fallforthebook.org).

Now through September 11, OLLI is joining George Mason University in support of a clothing drive to benefit Women Giving Back (WGB–http://womengivingback.org/), a local non-profit that helps women and children in Northern Virginia homeless shelters. Women re-establishing themselves in new careers and homes of their own can shop with WGB free of charge and can take up to 50 items each visit.
