Ethnic Eats! New OLLI Club Forming

By Leti Labell, OLLI member

Do you love to eat? Are you interested in learning about foods from other cultures? The DC area has an abundance of ethnic restaurants. We’re forming a new OLLI club to meet for lunch on a regular basis to explore new cuisines. Does this sound like your cup of tea (or chai or té or thé)? If you’re interested, send an email to leti@verizon.net.

Also, we’ll have an informal meeting on Friday, September 22, right after the Fairfax Fall Term Kickoff Coffee. Come to TA-1 at 10:00 to meet new members, and then join us afterwards to help plan this new club. Bon appétit!

Medicine Bottle Collection

By Ginge Sivigny, OLLI Member

During the summer session, OLLI members donated over 450 empty medicine bottles for Matthew 25 Ministries in Cincinnati, a highly-regarded international humanitarian and disaster relief organization whose motto is: “Caring for A Needy World with The Things We Throw Away.” These bottles will be combined with medical supplies and shipped to developing countries around the world.

Our next collection will be during the winter session. Please wait until then to bring your clean, EMPTY pill bottles (with caps) to OLLI. Our intention is to hold 2 collections a year, during the summer and winter sessions.

Meanwhile, the next National Drug Take Back Day will be October 28, 2017. On that day you will be able to take any leftover medicine to the police station, where it will be disposed of safely.

Computer Club

By Paul Howard, OPCUG Program Chair

The Computer Club (OLLI Personal Computer User Group, or OPCUG) will meet with its partner, the Potomac Area Technology and Computer Society (PATACS), on Saturday, September 16, at Tallwood. Socializing in the Annex at 12:30 followed by program at 1:00 in TA‑1.

23 and Me: Discover Your Genetic Blueprint—Geof Goodrum
23 and Me is a commercial service that provides personal genetic analysis services, including reports on ancestry, personal characteristics, and markers for hereditary diseases. Information doesn’t get any more personal than this! Geof Goodrum registered for 23 and Me in June 2016, and will provide an overview of the costs, features, and privacy/health issues related to this service, then tour the website and his personal genetic reports. Is Geof likely to go bald? Attend this meeting to find out!

Geof previously presented highlights from the January 2017 International Consumer Electronics Show. An active user-group volunteer since 1985, he is a founding member on the PATACS Board of Directors and Co-Editor of the PATACS Posts newsletter.

Learn in 30: Bike Riding for Techies and All Others—Lorrin Garson
What does cycling have to do with computers and related topics? Practically nothing! But there is a growing interest in bike riding, particularly among the “chronologically gifted” who are taking up the activity—especially with the popularity of electric-assist bike motors.

Lorrin has cycled over 26,000 miles since retiring in 2004 and will share his experience and knowledge of the topic.

See full details on this meeting by clicking here. For information on the Computer Club, see the OPCUG website. OPCUG dues of $5 for 2017 will be collected at this meeting.

Can't make the meeting in person? Dues-paid club members may attend via Zoom's cloud meeting service, beginning at 12:45. Send a message to webinarhosts@patacs.org if you plan to attend in this way. Join from PC, Mac, Linux, iOS or Android: https://zoom.us/j/974573534 (Zoom Meeting ID: 974 573 534).

Clean Out Your Closet and Help Others

By Martha Powers, Board Member

Now through September 11, OLLI is joining George Mason University in support of a clothing drive to benefit Women Giving Back (WGB–http://womengivingback.org/), a local non-profit that helps women and children in Northern Virginia homeless shelters. Women re-establishing themselves in new careers and homes of their own can shop with WGB free of charge and can take up to 50 items each visit.

To support this worthy cause, OLLI is currently collecting good-quality, clean, seasonally-appropriate women’s clothing, including

  • Women’s suits, skirts, blouses, pants, coats, jackets, casual clothing (including plus size);
  • Gently-worn shoes, jewelry, accessories, purses, and totes;
  • Unopened makeup and toiletries; and
  • Clean and gently-worn infant’s, children’s, and teen’s clothing (both boys' and girls').

A collection box will be atop the microwave in the Social Room through Monday, September 11. Please clean out your closet and help a woman in need.

Risk-Taking

Will the net appear safely beneath me
if I leap to a shadowed unknown,
eyes tightly scrunched against demons,
breath banded tightly unblown?

Will I land, bouncing gently in hammock,
a miracle to save me from wreck?
Will I find those sweet words in the mailbox,
“We accept, enclosed please find check?”

Or will I again simply bump down
on those rocky lumps we collect,
“Can’t use it,” Too long,” “Inappropriate”
“Not buying just now,” “We reject.”
