Reston Book Club Meeting

By Nancy Scheeler and Luci Martel, Reston Book Club Coordinators

The Reston Book Club will meet on Thursday, October 22, at 4:00, via Zoom (a direct link and other information can be found by signing in at the member portal and clicking on ZOOM CLASS LINKS in the list at the left side of the resulting screen). The selection will be Olive Again by Elizabeth Strout, a follow-on to the previously successful book Olive Kitteridge—that tart, crotchety, but nonetheless beloved, curmudgeon. While helpful, it is not necessary to have read the first book. Olive Again is a wonderful and sometimes comical commentary on the aging process. Those planning to attend should make sure they are signed up for the Reston Book Club to ensure they receive the member sign-in and password to access.

Kneading Time

At our wedding many years ago,
we broke bread with our guests as part of the ceremony,
ten loaves that we had baked ourselves.

Kneading dough is its own ceremony,
a communion with something alive and growing.
a hands-on creation of sustenance.

Baking bread is time consuming, though,
time for the dough to rise, rest
and rise again, time for the bread to bake.

Back then I had time
and willingly gave it in return for the heavenly aroma
and taste of bread right out of the oven.

But demands on my time multiplied;
I grew impatient with home-made bread’s requirements;
store-bought loaves were so much easier.

Now my time expands even as it contracts;
the pleasures of old pursuits call me again,
my hands long to heel and push the springy dough

I dream of us savoring warm, fragrant bread together,
revisiting the time of our early love
and reveling in its delicious memories.
