Notes from the Board of Directors Meeting

By Irene Osterman, Board Secretary

The Board met on Fri, Jan 16 at Tallwood and discussed the following:

An article will be placed in the January 30 E-News asking all members to log into the new member portal to set up passwords and update their member profiles. The new system will go into effect for the spring registration.

A resolution to fund a number of projects needed to ensure the viability of Tallwood for the next five years was tabled as George Mason University has generously agreed to take care of many of them.

A donation of $2000 from Friends of OLLI funds to the Fall for the Book program was approved.

Plans are being made to hold events to thank our volunteers and to encourage more members to volunteer.

Ask Uncle Olli

By Uncle Olli, Driver Safety Consultant

Uncle Olli has lived in Northern Virginia most of his lifetime, and has encountered every traffic problem. But sometimes the little problems seem so trivial you are embarrassed to admit them. Easy. Ask Uncle Olli at ollienewseditor@gmail.com. He is embarrassed by nothing!

I DON'T HAVE THE TIME NOR THE HAND CLEANER TO ALLOW ME TO CHECK TIRE PRESSURES EVERY TIME I GAS UP. GET REAL!

Checking tire pressures does take time, and can be messy. But you can easily memorize what a properly filled tire looks like. Look at the tire just after it has been filled to the correct pressure. Memorize this. You will then find it easy to tell when the tire looks 'too fat' after that, which will warn you your tire is low. Now act helpless, and get your grandson to fill it for you, using the tire gauge you keep in the car at all times to ensure correct pressure. Works every time.

Essential Winter Trip

In the heat of summer
A cold brew I eagerly await

In winter it’s a strong hot Starbucks
With a nod and a smile I take

I slide into the cold pickup seat
                        For a January ride

The cold leather sort of squeaks
My backside has a patch of discomforting hide

            My eyes slightly fog
My cold nose starts to drip

                        Thru gloves cold penetrates
                        To my finger tips

Good God—is it essential
That I take this trip?

            I flick on the key
            The Tacoma hums

                        The wiper blades alas
                        Frozen to the window glass

I move forward for a slow getaway
To pick up toilet paper at the local Safeway
