OLLI's Fourth Annual Veterans Day Celebration By Martha Powers, Board Member and OLLI InstructorPlease join us as we recognize our veterans and the 100th anniversary of Armistice Day on Friday, November 9, from 1:00 to 3:00 in TA‑1 (Special Event F1001). We’ll begin with the presentation of the colors and our national anthem by the Fairfax Police Ceremonial Honor Guard. All veterans will be recognized to the tune of their branches’ anthems, and we’ll be serenaded by the barbershop quartet Sympatico.This year’s feature film is “The Hello Girls,” about 223 female members of the US Army Signal Corps who served as telephone operators in Europe in WWI—yet were not recognized for their service for 60 years afterward. This captivating one-hour documentary is newly released and not yet shown in theaters or televised. You can view the trailer at this link.

OLLI’s Audiovisual Support Committee (a.k.a. The Tom Swift Squad) seeks additional volunteers to help ensure the smooth employment of OLLI's audiovisual resources. Our primary mission is to help instructors, liaisons, and staff with any audiovisual issues that might arise during the classes we attend.
We'll be meeting at 2:00 on Wednesday, October 17 at Tallwood in TA‑1. We'll be trying out a new computer system for classroom use, discussing and possibly installing new wireless microphone systems, and continuing to plan for the silent auction of surplus equipment slated for November 2.

A Sensitive—But Very Important—Class Topic By Martha Powers, Board Member and OLLI Instructor
When you read your OLLI fall catalog, you may have flinched at the subject of one class: F986 Lynching Photography and Representations of Racial Violence in the United States.
Clearly, this is a difficult subject, and instructor LaNitra Berger would like to warn you that “the images are graphic and disturbing. We should all be very disturbed that African Americans were brutalized in this horrific way.”
That said, this is also a very important topic—one that should not be swept under the rug. If your immediate reaction was to consider not taking this class, perhaps it’s time to reconsider.
I hope that you will consider joining us for this class on Monday, October 22, at 9:40 at Tallwood TA-3.

Reston Book Club Coordinators
The Reston Book Club will have its October meeting on Thursday, October 18 at 2:15 at the United Christian Parish Church in Reston. The book selection is Pachinko by Min Jin Lee. The book, covering a four-generation timespan, tells the story of poor, proud Korean immigrants in Japan—and their fight to control their destinies—exiled from a homeland they never knew.
The Computer Club (OLLI Personal Computer User Group, or OPCUG) will meet with its partner, the Potomac Area Technology and Computer Society (PATACS), on Saturday, October 20, at Tallwood. Join us at 12:30 for socializing in the Annex. Program activities begin at 1:00 in TA‑1.

Gary Vaughan is a senior IT and knowledge management advisor (Buchanan & Edwards) with the Office of eDiplomacy at the State Department.
WordPress is a popular, powerful, and user-friendly open source software that accounts for about 25% of all sites on the Web. WordPress is a great way to create a personal blog or website for family, community group, or small business. After his presentation, Gary has offered to consult pro bono with people for 10-15 minutes to help folks understand the basics entailed in their specific application.
