On Friday, October 26, a busload of 28 OLLI members took the Great Trash Tour set up by OLLI member John Nash, a former Fairfax County employee who knows all the right people.
First, the group visited the I‑66 Transfer Station on West Ox Road in Fairfax, where they were given an informative overview and then a tour of the facility. Next, they bused to Occoquan for lunch at Madigan’s, followed by a tour of Covanta energy recovery facility that converts 3,000 tons trash into ash daily, creating enough energy to meet the needs of 80,000 homes while also retrieving certain metals and controlling pollution. (The dress code for this part of the day included neon vests and hard hats.) Finally, the group enjoyed a bus tour of the I‑95 landfill where tons of ash are compacted into a massive landfill. This isn’t the first time that John Nash has arranged such a fascinating trip for his fellow OLLI members, and his tours are invariably wait-listed. Keep an eye on future catalogs for your chance to enjoy a great day of learning and camaraderie.

Do your grandkids like to tinker with electronic gear? We'll be auctioning stereo amplifiers, speakers, an audio mixer, and laptop computers. Got an irreplaceable VHS-tape collection, and no player? OLLI has several VHS/CD/DVD players that might fill the bill. Who knows what goodies may emerge from the shelves and storage spaces of OLLI's technology workshop in the cottage?
From the conclusion of the Town Hall Meeting until 12:45 on Friday, November 2, OLLI will hold a silent auction in TA‑2 to dispose of surplus electronic equipment. Each item will have an associated sheet for entering name and bid amount. We hope for a spirited competition. Money raised will be used to meet OLLI’s future technology needs.

Reston Book Club Coordinators
The Reston Book Club will have its November meeting on Thursday, November 8, 2018, at 2:15 at the United Christian Parish in Reston. The book selection is Sing, Unburied, Sing by Jesmyn Ward. The book tells the story of Jojo, who lives with his African-American grandparents, his toddler sister, and his drug-addicted mother in rural Mississippi, while his white father serves a prison sentence. The story follows the family’s history, which is tied up with the Mississippi State Penitentiary, also known as Parchman Farm.
Save the date, Friday, December 14, 11:00 to 1:00, in the social and coffee rooms at Tallwood for lots of fun and yummies.

The November meeting of the History Club will take place on Wednesday, November 7, at 2:15 in TA‑1. Our presenter will be Jenee Linder, who will be speaking on “The Fairfax Family Generational History: England to America to England Once More.” It is a fascinating story that begins before the American Revolution and continues long after. Jenee is president of the Friends of the Historic Fairfax Courthouse and, over many years, has done much work on the Fairfax family. Come and be enlightened, inspired, and perhaps, even surprised. Remember, all OLLI members are welcome to attend History Club meetings.
