186 Pairs of Eyeglasses and Counting!
By Martha Powers, Vice PresidentMany OLLI members took advantage of our recent eyeglass collection event, with some of you donating entire sacks of glasses! All told, OLLI will be donating 186 pairs of glasses to the Lions Club of Fairfax – plus 111 eyeglass cases! This is an unusually large donation for them, so the Lions Club invited us to present our donation at the beginning of their upcoming meeting.Just imagine those 186 people who will be able to see the world more clearly because you helped! Thank you for your generosity. (For the record, there is always a Lions eyeglass collection box available in the Social Room at Tallwood, so keep ‘em coming.)

OLLI Photo Club Members Photograph Military Personnel and Families
By John Nash, Member of E-News Editorial TeamOn Saturday, October 22, Dan Feighery, Bob Kelberg, and John Nash, members of the OLLI photo club, spent the day at the USO/Warrior Family Center at Fort Belvoir taking portraits of Wounded Warriors and their families. There were 13 portrait sittings with a total of 51 people, including families, single individuals, one eight-week-old baby…and two dogs. The USO staff downloaded the digital photographs, reviewed them with the participants and printed one professional-quality pose. The participants also left with a flash drive of all their pictures. Angela Talaber, photo club coordinator, arranged for a donation of special portrait photo paper from Red River Paper in Dallas, Texas, which made a measurable difference in print quality.

According to Ashy Palliparambil, the USO event coordinator, “We began this program 3 years ago when a family told us that they had never had a family portrait taken because they were so focused on their recovery. The families have always been and are still very appreciative of everyone’s time. It really means a lot to them. We could not offer this program without the help of our USO - and extended USO-OLLI family.”

This was a very happy group of people who had their portraits taken……and a very gratifying project for the OLLI members.

Mini Dia de Los Muertos Fiesta

By Marilyn O'Brien, Member of E-News Team

Ligia Glass' Intermediate Spanish Class had a mini Dia de Los Muertos (Day of the Dead) fiesta on October 31. The fiesta is celebrated on Nov 1 and 2 in all of Mexico, and honors the dead. Lots of flowers (especially marigolds), sugar skulls, and favorite foods of the departed adorn cemeteries and private altars. Despite its name, the holiday is a joyous one because it anticipates the resurrection of the dead to an afterlife in heaven. Besides learning about the holiday, the class enjoyed some delicious food and drinks compliments of Ligia and class members.

My Friends Paul and Heinrich

My friend Paul is 136 years old-
His birth year is 1880.
He existed for 90 years
Before he became my baby.

So who is this Paul?
Why is he so special to me?
We’ve made music together
For 46 years, you see.

Despite his age, one could say
He’s as fit as a fiddle this very day.
I am proud to keep him this way,
Mainly by making him play and play.

There’s 70 years between us, Paul and me.
He’s French; he comes from Gay Paris.
While the bow I use is German…
(Heinrich and Paul fight constantly.)

And yet, the three of us love to play—
Violin music, orchestral, and chamber—
Solo, duet, or multi-membered,
Playing music of many countries & genres.

Oh, Paul, you and I are such a pair!
I take you and Heinrich everywhere.
We perform in many places…
Most often indoors, but sometimes in open spaces.
