Happy 25th Anniversary, OLLI!
By Martha Powers, Vice President

Some 150 members celebrated OLLI’s 25th Anniversary on the afternoon of Friday, November 4, at the Church of the Good Shepherd in Burke. The event included the following:

  • Pre-party music by OLLI’s Recorder Consort, conducted by Helen Ackerman
  • A dessert bar featuring beautiful and delicious creations donated by Kathleen Pablo
  • An opportunity to purchase The History of OLLI book from members of the committee that made it possible
  • The Tallwood Trio with Nancy Riley for our listening pleasure
  • OLLI member and historic re-enactor Jenée Lindner as Sarah Tracy, whose special ties to the Church of the Good Shepherd were revealed (see photo by Paul Van Hemel; view more pictures from the party at this link).
  • Manny Pablo as master of ceremonies for the volunteer recognition part of our program
  • Lesley Bubenhofer, chair of OLLI’s Development Committee (FOLLI), presenting Mason’s Office of Military Services with a check in the amount of $25,625, our donation to their impressive program
  • A movie created by staffer Alice Slayton-Clark’s teenaged son Dylan (with voiceover by his dad, scripted by his mom), which commemorated OLLI founders and our history
  • Door prizes donated by OLLI members Carolyn Kramer, Lesley Bubenhofer, and Thelma Weiner

Special thanks to Toni and John Acton for setting up the event, with help from Jim Dunphy and other members of the Social Events Committee. Photographer George Addison captured the day for posterity, while Angie and Dave Talaber took photos of members at the giant green O-L-L-I letters.

This event highlighted the many talents of OLLI members: musical, educational, historical, and of course, gustatorial. Here’s to OLLI’s next 25 years!

Angry White Man

Yes
I’m angry

not at blacks
gays
lesbians
immigrants

not at taxes
Democrats
women
government

no
at you, Life
for leaving me
to Death

It’s common knowledge
you’re a mess
We were lovers
nevertheless.

Who can blame me
for being angry.
I don’t want to be an ex.
