Learning to Appreciate Professional Dancing

Many of us enjoy dancing…from watching Dancing with the Stars to doing a little fox-trotting and two-stepping ourselves. But the OLLI course Dance Choreography (F101) has helped many of us understand and better appreciate professional dancing and the work involved to develop it.

Presented by Linda Miller, professor in the School of Dance and a distinguished service professor at Mason, the course explores the evolution of a dance presentation, from inspiration, casting, and development to performance. For the next session (February 5), participants will go to the Mason dance studio on campus to watch a dance being choreographed.

“I enjoy so much the opportunity of presenting a program to OLLI members,” said Linda Miller, a 37-year member of the Mason dance program. “Because OLLI audiences are so familiar with the arts, including dance, I find it stimulating and challenging to address questions as we present our Mason dance accomplishments. I think of it as arts development or expansion as the structure to understand and appreciate is already there with OLLI members.”

During the classes, Miller has Mason dance students illustrate works being discussed. “This is an excellent way to help me understand the intricacies of putting a dance program together,” said one OLLI participant. The students demonstrate the movements, relationships, and symbolism which are keys to understanding many dance performances.

Miller also encouraged all OLLI members to attend the Dance Gala at the Center for the Arts, Friday and Saturday, March 23 and 24, at 8:00. The same program will be performed at the Manassas Hylton Center on March 25. Senior tickets are $15. For those wanting to join in the Mason Dance Fête on Saturday, March 24, which includes a performance ticket and a pre-performance social event in the deLaski Performing Arts building, the tickets are $95. Funds raised go to much needed dance scholarships. “Our goal this year is to completely fill the Center for the Arts on both nights and the Hylton Center,” said Miller. Collecting Empty Prescription Bottles

Donate your empty prescription bottles at Tallwood to help the needy. Please remove all labels, and be sure to include the cap. The bottles will be sorted, washed, bagged, and mailed to Matthew 25: Ministries in Cincinnati, Ohio. This is a highly- regarded international humanitarian and disaster relief organization whose motto is: "Caring for a Needy World with the Things We Throw Away." The empty bottles are combined with medical supplies and sent to developing countries where sometimes medicines are dispensed in paper because they don't have bottles. Collection is until February 16 in the Tallwood social room. If you’d like to help with sorting, washing, and mailing the bottles collected, please contact Ginge Sivigny.

Pot Roast Deluxe

It was nice to read that men of our generation are interested in cooking (ref: Cooking Column, January 26 E-News). I read that Easy Pot Roast recipe with great interest and even went to my supermarket to look for the recommended ingredients. However, I think the secret of a good pot roast is in the marinade and the browning of the beef. Here’s my recipe.   Elisabeth Wolpert.
