Appreciating OLLI Liaisons

By Shannon Kim Morrow, Registrar

Who wouldn’t want to experience a warm and inviting welcome to an unfamiliar setting? Who wouldn’t want someone to reach out to them and ask how they might be helped with unfamiliar tasks at a new organization? OLLI liaisons ensure that this is the case when contacting instructors and introducing them to class members.

It may seem that the liaison performs a minor duty, but what liaisons do is an integral part of what makes OLLI tick. Most importantly, liaisons introduce instructors, particularly new ones who’ve never taught at OLLI before.

That’s not all they do! Not only do they welcome instructors, but also they provide support in the classroom. If there are glitches with A/V equipment, if someone needs special assistance, or if there needs to be any other contact with a site assistant, liaisons are on the job!

Although I served as liaison for five classes this term, it has definitely been FUN and REWARDING to email and meet with the various instructors. Each instructor has told me about their own background and tales of what led to their particular specialties and classes. In most cases we shared similar experiences and it was fun probing for additional information I used in introducing them to the class. I also helped them determine where to park, what computer setup to use, microphone use, any classroom setups they wanted, and the friendliness of their audience who are there to hear their tales, not challenge them! This all helped them feel at ease and welcome in coming to OLLI. A really fun experience and NOT work! —Bob Heyer, liaison for five classes in winter 2018 term.

The OLLI staff greatly appreciates all those who step up term after term to volunteer as a liaison. Without liaisons, the OLLI experience would not be the same! Thank you all very much!

Mah Jongg Club

By Liz Bateman, Coordinator, Mah Jongg Club

We welcome all members who want to learn or already know how to play Mah Jongg. Stretch your mind and have fun with a game that is (maybe) easier than bridge, but definitely challenging.

Those who would like to play must register for the Mah Jongg Club. To register, sign in on OLLI's website and enter the words "Mah Jongg Club" in the Search box at the top of the home page. Select the term "Calendar Year 2018." Click on the name of the desired club/ongoing activity and wait a second. Then you will see where you can "Check Out."For more information, contact Liz Bateman.

Alone in a Crowded Planet

No man is an island, entire of itself; every man
Is a piece of the continent, a part of the main…
Any man's death diminishes me, because I am
Involved in all mankind; and therefore
Never send to know for whom the bell tolls;
It tolls for thee.
(John Donne, Devotions upon Emergent Occasions, no. 17)

In a turbulent overcrowded planet
There are many people who feel alone.
There are over 40 million people in America
Who feel lonely.

No one to scratch your back when it itches.
No one to complain to about the weather.
No one to cheer you up when you are down.
No one to laugh at your jokes.
No one who knows your story
Or was willing to listen to it.

In Japan many elderly in anonymous flats
Lack the daily touch
Of friends and family.
One died and only three years later
The body was discovered.

Caring is the antidote to loneliness
Be alert to a lonely person
Standing alone and looking sad.
Speak to those who stand alone.
Call someone who has no one.

No one should be alone

No one should die alone
