2018 Board of Directors Election By Terri Feldmayer, Nominating Committee Chair
Candidates for the 2018 Board of Directors election are: Michelle Blandburg (for re-election), Lillian Brooks, Marguerite Johnson, Norma Reck (for re-election), Charles Silver, Diane Stanley, and Bill Taylor (for re-election).
Candidate biographies and photos will be available beginning April 2 on the OLLI Website. Candidates’ information also will be available on posters in each of the social areas at Tallwood, Reston, and Loudoun.
Here are upcoming dates where members can meet the candidates:
- April 20, 2018: The Salad Social in Reston will give OLLI members a chance to hear a brief statement from each candidate, followed by a question and answer time.
- May 4, 2018: The Annual Membership Meeting at Tallwood; another chance to meet and talk with candidates. Voting begins.
- May 4 - May 18: OLLI members’ voting untl noon on May 18.

International Urban Search and Rescue
Task Force One Visit and Demonstration

There's just been an earthquake in Fairfax, and you're stuck under rubble in your basement. Who will find you...and how?
Fairfax County’s International Urban Search and Rescue Task Force One will visit OLLI in TA‑1 on Friday, April 13, at 1:00, with a demonstration of their life saving equipment in a lecture called Beyond the Whispers. Special guest: ANGUS, their "top dog" will return to prove that you can teach an old dog new tricks! Register for F971 spring 2018.

The April meeting of the History Club will take place on Wednesday, April 4, at 2:15 in TA-1. David Heymsfeld, OLLI member and teacher, will give a presentation on a subject which he titles “Learning About History from Historical Fiction.” More than likely, most members of the History Club enjoy reading historical fiction, but perhaps we never consider the ways writers of such fiction work to convey the past accurately. David will illustrate his theme with readings from several novels, such as Herman Wouk’s World War II novels, and Tom Wolfe’s novel about New York City in the 1980s, Bonfire of the Vanities. The meeting promises to be a lively one that will give us a new perspective on historical fiction.
All OLLI members are invited to History Club meetings; you need not be a member of the History Club.
The OLLI spring term began on a beautiful note with the first performance of the Music Sampler. The Dream Trio, consisting of Faith Zuniga on piano, Anna Kong on violin, and Zackary Whitaker on cello, filled the place with beautiful music as OLLI members enjoyed the live presentation.
The Music Sampler, coordinated by Dr. Kathryn Hearden, Mason professor of vocal studies, is held each Tuesday morning, beginning at 9:30, in the sanctuary of the Lutheran Lord of Life church, one of OLLI’s off-campus venues. Dr. Hearden arranges for Mason students, faculty and other local professionals to offer various musical performances.
If you have not signed up for an OLLI class on Tuesday mornings, you can still attend the Music Sampler. There is plenty of seating available. Not only will you be supporting these outstanding volunteer musicians, but you’ll enjoy some of the best music available - and you won't have to pay Kennedy Center prices! (Photo by John Nash)

Arthur S. Hill, OLLI member since fall 1999, died on Saturday, March 10, in Falmouth, MA. He ran the OLLI discussion group “All the News” for many years in Reston. He and his wife Cynthia had moved to Massachusetts during the last year. The Celebration of Life will take place at the Unitarian Universalist Church in Falmouth, MA, on May 19, 2018.
