History Club April Meeting

By Beth Lambert, History Club Coordinator

The April meeting of the History Club will take place on Wednesday, April 4, at 2:15 in TA-1. David Heymsfeld, OLLI member and teacher, will give a presentation on a subject which he titles “Learning About History from Historical Fiction.” More than likely, most members of the History Club enjoy reading historical fiction, but perhaps we never consider the ways writers of such fiction work to convey the past accurately. David will illustrate his theme with readings from several novels, such as Herman Wouk’s World War II novels, and Tom Wolfe’s novel about New York City in the 1980s, Bonfire of the Vanities. The meeting promises to be a lively one that will give us a new perspective on historical fiction.

All OLLI members are invited to History Club meetings; you need not be a member of the History Club.

Spring Term Begins on a Beautiful Note

By John Nash, E-News Writer

The OLLI spring term began on a beautiful note with the first performance of the Music Sampler. The Dream Trio, consisting of Faith Zuniga on piano, Anna Kong on violin, and Zackary Whitaker on cello, filled the place with beautiful music as OLLI members enjoyed the live presentation.

The Music Sampler, coordinated by Dr. Kathryn Hearden, Mason professor of vocal studies, is held each Tuesday morning, beginning at 9:30, in the sanctuary of the Lutheran Lord of Life church, one of OLLI’s off-campus venues. Dr. Hearden arranges for Mason students, faculty and other local professionals to offer various musical performances.

If you have not signed up for an OLLI class on Tuesday mornings, you can still attend the Music Sampler. There is plenty of seating available. Not only will you be supporting these outstanding volunteer musicians, but you’ll enjoy some of the best music available - and you won't have to pay Kennedy Center prices!  (Photo by John Nash)

Poet's Corner

Courtesy of the Poetry Workshop

Playing Brahms’ Capriccio #7

Deep thick chords
Augmented seventh arpeggios
Staccato releases
Alternating hands taking turns.

Key and meter changes
Legato versus staccato
Soft against loud
Quirky chords expressing tension.

Soft arpeggio passage getting louder,
louder, and LOUDER until
both hands in unison arrive at the
recapitulation.

The theme returns, but with counterpoint,
hands echoing each other to a furious coda.
A meter change to 3/8 where left hand dominates.
Many diminished seventh chords fill one’s ears.

Finally ending in 2/4 time in double forte,
Two inversions of the D Major Chord
Tonic form held firmly at the end
For ear’s final relief.
