Veterans Day Event Held November 8
By Jim Dunphy, OLLI Annual Veterans Day Celebration CoordinatorOLLI’s 5th annual Veterans Day commemoration honored veterans in a special event on November 8. As the participants, bundled up against the cold, came to Tallwood for the event, they were serenaded by the George Mason Fife and Drum Corps, playing a medley of patriotic and revolutionary airs.Once inside the warmth of TA‑1, the City of Fairfax Honor Guard posted the colors and their vocalist provided an excellent rendition of the National Anthem. We started the salute to veterans with a medley of service songs and asked veterans of each service to stand and be recognized when their respective service’s song was played.

As we do each year, we gave a special salute to OLLI’s two WWII veterans, Chester Myslicki and Adrian Pelzner. The theme this year was the Vietnam War. Several veterans of that conflict provided information about their service in-country or the contiguous waters and were received with rousing applause.

To cap off the event, we viewed a video dealing with the items left behind at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial and the effect these had not only on the friends and family of those whose names are on the wall, but also on those who visit the memorial. Everyone in attendance was very moved by this film.

It is OLLI’s honor to recognize and salute those among us who have served the nation in uniform. We look forward to another such salute in November of 2020.

The Beauty of Traveling

Conceptualization

When you first plan a trip, you decide where to go.

You look at guides, or perhaps you already know.

You see pictures of places you long to visit,

So you sign up for a tour and then you commit.

Anticipation

Then you wait, the excitement builds, you pack.

Finally the day comes, you hope all is on track.

You hop on a plane, a boat or a car,

Arriving at last—why, here you are!

Realization

You visit sights you’ve never seen before,

Get out your camera, take pictures galore.

Eat exotic foods, sleep on strange beds,

Before you know it, you’re back at the homestead.
