- The new spring catalog was mailed February 9. But why wait for the mail? You can see the catalog now and the listing of terrific courses offered for the spring term by going to the OLLI website at ollidev2.earthcare.com.

- The OLLI Board of Directors will meet at 10:00, Friday, February 17, at TA-1. All members are welcome.

- The Ice Cream Social and Hawaiian Luau will be held from 1:00 to 3:00, Friday, February 10 in TA-1. There will be a talent show, baked goods, and more. The serving line opens at 12:30. The event is now waitlisted.

- Candidates are being recruited for the 2017 OLLI Board of Directors election on May 5. If you would like to know more about the responsibilities of board members or know of someone who may be interested in becoming a candidate, please contact Terri Feldmayer, Nominating Committee Chair.

Office Volunteers: The Face of OLLI

Nothing raises your OLLI spirit more than to pop into the Tallwood office and be greeted by the smiling face of the member sitting right there. At a cramped desk, behind a tall counter, likely on the phone or working with someone, that volunteer handles your question or needs right away.

Join me in saluting these folks today, as I take pride in naming them to the just-established President’s List of Volunteer Achievement. Next week there will be another group, those who build and carry out our program of courses and events.

Spring Term Is On Its Way!

Can spring be on its way? Yep, and also heading our way is OLLI spring priority registration, February 14 to 24 at noon. To help you remember, an advertisement promoting OLLI will be displayed on the Mason marquee during these dates. When driving down Braddock Road, look for the OLLI announcement rotating periodically on the big screen.

Mason generously provides OLLI with free space on the marquee to announce our registration periods. This is a wonderful opportunity to use a very visible medium to promote OLLI.

Watch for OLLI's ad on the Mason marquee and have our friends do the same. Let them know they can attend an OLLI class or two for free if they would like to sample the offerings. This just may be the incentive someone needs to join OLLI. Spring is coming and so is another great selection of OLLI classes for all of us to enjoy!

New Member Coffee

Hello, OLLI....Well, Hello, OLLI

“You're still glowin', you're still crowin', you're still goin' strong!”

To show that we’re all of the above, members of the OLLI Photo Club recently gathered at the statue of George Mason on the Mason campus to record a greeting to the National Osher Lifelong Learning Conference to be held in Dallas, April 3-6. According to Jennifer Disano, OLLI executive director, each of the 119 Osher Lifelong Learning Institutes across the country can submit a short video highlighting their members and location to be included in a welcome to the conference attendees. Jennifer asked Angie Talaber, OLLI Photo Club coordinator, to take on the task, and Angie recruited some club members and a good photographer for the job.

“We thought the statue of George Mason would appropriately symbolize OLLI’s desire for learning as well as our relationship with the university,” Angie said. So, on a beautiful, cold and windy day, everyone assembled at the statue and sent a warm greeting to the national convention. Ed Marion set up his camera and took both video and still photos, one of which is shown here.

A special thanks to Josh Cantor, the “parking guru,” and the Mason Shuttle Service for arranging a bus to take the photo club members from Tallwood to the selected location.

Did the passing students think the OLLI group was strange? Most gave only a passing glance, probably thinking it was another protest group, although two students were interested in the OLLI classes when they learned there were no tests administered!

Get to Know the Mason Library – Step Two

Thus far you have followed directions on the OLLI instruction sheet obtained in the office, completed the requisite forms, and received your G number and Mason email address. You’ve even slogged over to the designated Mason office to pick up your ID and may have already visited the library to check out books.

Now prepare to take advantage of the library’s online resources. Follow these steps to get a user name (also called NetID) and password to activate your Patriot Pass Account:

• In your computer browser, type password.gmu.edu.
• Select Option 1 to activate your Patriot Pass account.
• Enter your G number (preceded by a capital G) and claim code. The default claim code is your six-digit date of birth in this format: MMDDYY.
• Answer security questions and quiz and create a password.
• Complete the form by entering the photo of your ID.

The claim code will only work if this is the first time you are activating your account.

If you have activated your account in the past, and cannot reset the account using their security questions (password.gmu.edu OPTION 3), please fax the following form (http://www.gmu.edu/depts/itu/tsd/tss/support/claim_code_reset_form_access.pdf) along with a copy of your photo ID (Driver’s License, Mason ID, or Passport) to get a new claim code. If you need help, call the Mason IT Department (703-993-8870), and a very friendly person will offer guidance.

Armed with your NetID (which is the first part of your email address) and password, you’re ready to access the Mason Library online resources from the comfort of your own computer chair (http://library.gmu.edu/). Explore all the free databases to your heart’s content. Also check out the website, lynda.gmu.edu, which gives free access to videos, tutorials, scholarly journals, newspapers, magazines and much more.

Spring Course to Discuss Art in Public Places

This is to highlight course R-113 Exploring Public Art through Documentaries in the upcoming spring catalog. In this class I believe you will learn an amazing amount about an aspect of art not usually presented to our members, namely the challenges and excitements of art in public places, presented through four films about specific public art projects. The films describe what goes into designing, installing, and paying for pieces which are in our parks, streets, and plazas, surrounding us as a part of our lives. Films will be presented that document public art projects here in Reston, the High Line public park in New York City, and the Bay Lights monumental light sculpture on the San Francisco–Oakland Bay Bridge. The two presenters, Anne Delaney and Jeanne Loveland, have much experience in this little understood arena.

On March 30, Rebekah Wingert-Jabi, a local filmmaker, will discuss films she created about Reston's public art.

Whether your interest lies in sculpture or film, do not miss this class!!

Computer Club

The Computer Club (OLLI Personal Computer User Group, or OPCUG) will meet with its partner, the Potomac Area Technology and Computer Society (PATACS), on Saturday, February 18, at Tallwood. Join us at 12:30 for soft drinks and socializing in the social room. Program activities begin at 1:00. This month's topics are:

Tech Support for Your Mobile Device. Presented by Jeff Dove.
Computers have evolved to become more portable, a trend accelerating over the last decade. The convergence of the phone and computer has changed the way we interact with technology. Faster and more capable smartphones have made many computing tasks and behaviors transition to become mobile. Come learn how to manage and protect your mobile device: backups/restoration, security/privacy, managing storage/data usage, and mobile payments.

Jeff Dove has helped people solve computer problems for over 10 years; he has extensive knowledge of mobile devices from Blackberry and Windows to Apple and Android. Jeff currently works for the city of Fairfax and has taught mobile device workshops at Fairfax City’s senior center.

Learn in 30: Two Factor Authentication - What is it and why do I need it? Presented by Roger Fujii.
This session discusses two-factor/multifactor authentication and its importance in computer security. Security-related questions welcomed.

Roger Fujii is widely experienced in computer graphics and security, with a current interest in VR/360 video and 3D printing.

OLLI's Audiovisual Support Committee (a.k.a. The Tom Swift Squad) seeks additional volunteers to help ensure the smooth employment of OLLI's audiovisual resources. Our primary mission is to help instructors, liaisons, and staff with any audiovisual issues that might arise during the classes we attend.

We will meet at 1:00, Wednesday, February 15, in TA-3. We'll be doing hands-on training on OLLI's classroom audiovisual equipment, including projectors and HDMI connections, and, if time permits, will introduce new equipment that will allow wireless audio and video connections for hand-held devices and laptops.

Please contact me by email (preferred) or phone (703-860-9246) if you're planning to attend or would like to become a "Swiftie" even if you can't attend this meeting.
